(Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins have had all sorts of trouble beating teams from the American League as of late, so the scuffling club will try its luck against the National League when it starts up a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at Miller Park.
After halting a season-high six-game losing streak with Wednesday's 8-5 victory at Cleveland, the Twins' recent woes resumed in last night's matchup with the Indians. The Tribe pounded Minnesota pitching for 18 hits en route to a 12-2 triumph in the rubber match of a three-game set.
Most of the damage came against Livan Hernandez (6-4), as the Twins starter was roughed up for seven runs and 12 hits while lasting just three-plus innings. The veteran righty also served up a three-run homer to Shin-Soo Choo and a solo blast to Grady Sizemore.
Justin Morneau went 3-for-3 at the plate for Minnesota and Matt Macri hit his first major league home run, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
The Twins have historically fared pretty well in interleague play, although the club did lose two of three games to Colorado back in May. Minnesota is 107-88 all-time against the National League and has won nine of its last 13 encounters with the Brewers.
Milwaukee has been hot lately, however. The Brewers won for the 12th time in 16 games with Thursday's 9-6 triumph at Houston, highlighted by a four-homer barrage by the Milwaukee offense.
Corey Hart hit a three-run homer for the Brewers while Prince Fielder, Mike Cameron and Gabe Kapler all had solo shots in the win. The outburst came one day after the Brewers slugged five home runs in a 10-6 victory over Houston on Wednesday, with Hart delivering a pair of two-run blasts to lead the way.
Milwaukee ace Ben Sheets held the Astros to three runs over seven innings of work and struck out nine batters to improve his season record to 7-1.
The Brewers will call upon Dave Bush to pitch tonight's series opener. The right-hander has been tough at Miller Park this season, having compiled a 2-1 record and a solid 3.45 earned run average in his five home starts.
In his most recent time on the Miller Park mound, Bush limited Houston to one run and four hits over seven excellent innings to pick up a victory on June 1. He didn't fare nearly as well at Colorado's Coors Field this past Saturday, as Bush surrendered five runs and lasted just four frames in Milwaukees 7-2 setback to the Rockies.
Bush is just 1-3 with a 4.10 ERA in four career matchups with the Twins and lost to Minnesota at Miller Park last season. In that game, the 28-year-old was reached for five runs over 7 1/3 innings of work.
Kevin Slowey gets the starting assignment for Minnesota this evening and hopes to better a brutal showing in his previous outing.
Against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday, Slowey was battered for eight runs and 10 hits over a season-low three innings as the Twins were routed by a 12-2 score. The control specialist is 0-2 with a 12.00 ERA in two starts since twirling a complete-game six hitter in a 5-1 victory at Kansas City on May 29.
Sloweys only past encounter with the Brewers came at the Metrodome on June 17 of last season. He allowed four runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings and received a no-decision in a 10-9 Minnesota win.
These teams split six interleague matchups last season, with the Twins taking two of three games from the Brewers at Miller Park.
