(Sports Network) - Right-handed workhorse Roy Halladay can earn his first career win against Chicago and maintain a 2008 streak today when the Toronto Blue Jays host the Cubs in game two of a three-game interleague series at Rogers Centre.
Halladay lost his lone career start against the Cubs, allowing seven hits and two runs over seven innings, while striking out five and walking none.
He's been nothing but successful recently, however, winning five straight decisions and six of his last seven overall.
The former first-round draft choice defeated Baltimore in his last outing, allowing eight hits and four runs over 7 2.3 innings of the Blue Jays' 5-4 win.
His last loss came more than one month ago, on May 9 at Cleveland.
Chicago righty Jason Marquis comes in with a similar, if not quite as spectacular, scenario.
Marquis is also 0-1 in his career against today's opponent, posting a 7.50 earned run average in three lifetime appearances - one start.
In those games, he's given up nine hits and five earned runs in six innings.
More recently, though, the 29-year-old is unbeaten in five straight decisions, going 3-0 while allowing 25 hits and 11 earned runs in 28 innings.
His last loss came May 13, when the Cubs were beaten, 4-3, by San Diego at Wrigley Field.
On Friday, Matt Stairs and Scott Rolen both homered in a three-run third inning, as the Blue Jays edged the Cubs, 3-2. Stairs drove in two runs and Rolen the other while Alex Rios added three hits, scoring once for Toronto, which has played the victor in two of three.
A.J. Burnett (6-6) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning, settling down until he was pulled in the sixth with 111 pitches. The right-hander finished allowing two runs on four hits through five-plus innings. Burnett struck out seven, snapping a three-start winless streak. Toronto's bullpen tossed four scoreless frames to preserve the victory.
Sean Gallagher (3-3) had a costly third inning but pitched well otherwise as the starter, surrendering three runs and seven hits over five-plus innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out five for Chicago, which saw a four- game winning streak snapped.
Kosuke Fukudome was 2-for-3 with a walk, scoring twice while Jim Edmonds was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
Toronto has won five of its seven matchups with the Cubs since 2003.
