(Sports Network) - Right-hander Eddie Bonine makes his major-league debut on the interleague stage today when the Detroit Tigers host the Los Angeles Dodgers in game two of their three-game series at Comerica Park.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pounder is a native of Columbus, Georgia.
He was selected in the 23rd round of the 2003 draft by the San Diego Padres after playing college ball at the University of Nevada.
Bonine will try to make it two wins in a row for the Tigers, for whom Armando Galarraga continued a breakthrough season on Friday, pitching seven shutout innings as the Tigers beat the Dodgers, 5-0.
Galarraga (6-2) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out five to win his third consecutive decision.
The right-hander, who reached the big leagues with the Texas Rangers in 2007 and was largely non-descript, allowing eight hits and six runs in 8 2/3 innings over two relief appearances, has won six of his 11 starts this year.
Freddy Dolsi threw a perfect final two innings for his second save.
Magglio Ordonez belted a two-run homer and Marcus Thames added a solo shot for the Tigers, who have won four in a row and six of seven. Shortstop Michael Hollimon, in his second major league game, recorded his first RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Juan Pierre, Russell Martin and James Loney had the only hits for the Dodgers, losers of three in a row and seven of their last 10 games.
Derek Lowe (4-6), a native of Dearborn, Michigan, was tagged with the loss as he surrendered eight hits and three runs -- two earned -- over seven innings. The right-hander, who logged five strikeouts, fell to 7-2 lifetime against Detroit.
Los Angeles goes with veteran Brad Penny today, hoping the 30-year-old Oklahoma native can end a skid that's seen him go 0-6 with a no-decision in seven outings since is last win.
Penny was touched for six hits and three runs in the most recent of his struggles, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Chicago Cubs on June 8.
Oddly, he began the season on a hot streak and actually sat 5-2 with a 3.19 earned run average after a May 2 win at Colorado.
Since, he's seen the ERA swell to 5.38 and has allowed 52 hits in 39 2/3 innings.
He lost his lone career start against Detroit, allowing six hits and two earned runs in seven innings.
These two clubs are playing their first series since the Dodgers took two of three at home from June 6-8, 2005. They hadn't met in Detroit since the 2003 season, a three-game sweep for LA.
