(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves gun for their first three-game win streak in nearly a month as they close out their three-game interleague set against the LA Angels of Anaheim tonight at Angel Stadium.
On Saturday the Braves were rewarded with a huge effort by young starter Charlie Morton on the hill as he picked up his first win of the season for the club. Horton allowed three runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four in six innings of action.
Horton was supported by Mark Teixeira who had just one hit but still knocked in three runs in the 9-4 decision. Yunel Escobar knocked in two and also scored twice, while Brandon Jones picked up three hits and two runs scored himself.
Although he failed to post a hit, Chipper Jones did have a pair of walks and an RBI after missing Friday night's affair after being hit in the eye with a batted ball during practice in the cage.
Torii Hunter had a pair of doubles for the home team, while Maicer Izturis plated a pair of runners. Back in the lineup for the second straight day was Chone Figgins, responding with a hit, a walk, a run scored and his 12th stolen base of the campaign.
LA starter Ervin Santana was tabbed for his third loss of the season, permitting six runs on nine hits, two of those home runs, while striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.
Trying to remain perfect on the season, as well as for his brief major league career, Jorge Campillo takes the hill for the Braves tonight in the series finale.
Campillo, who played with Seattle for parts of the last three seasons but failed to figure into any decisions, is 2-0 this year with the Braves, having struck out an impressive 38 batters in just 46 innings of work.
Used primarily as a reliever by Atlanta for much of this season, this is actually the sixth start of the campaign for the 29-year old. Campillo last pitched on Thursday, logging just 1/3 of an inning against the Chicago Cubs in what became a 3-2 loss on the road.
The right-hander has faced the Angels previously while with the Mariners, logging a 13.50 ERA in just 2 2/3 innings.
As for Anaheim, it is banking on Joe Saunders having a strong first outing against Atlanta. The lefty already has nine wins this season, but his effort on Monday against Tampa Bay was perhaps his worst of the young season.
In that 13-4 home loss Saunders was touched for nine hits (three home runs) and a total of eight runs in a mere 4 2/3 innings. In his last three outings Saunders has been touched for six home runs, one more than his previous 10 games combined.
Despite being the top hitter in all of baseball with a .409 average, Chipper Jones has looked rather mortal this past week with just two hits in 11 at- bats. Trying to pick up some of the slack is Yunel Escobar who has nine hits and four runs scored in his last 26 at-bats.
Vladimir Guerrero, who has started off slow with just 35 RBI in 62 games, has picked up the pace a bit in the last week with five knocked in, courtesy of three home runs and 10 hits overall. Izturis has hit safely in 13 straight games, tying his career-high set in 2005.
In the only previous series between the Angels and Braves, Anaheim won two of three meetings at Turner Field from June 6-8, 2005.
