Detroit Tigers (32-37) at San Francisco Giants (30-40), 10:15 p.m.

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers will try to extend their best run of the season when the resurgent club starts up a three-game series tonight against a San Francisco Giants squad simply hoping to get a win over an American League team.

Detroit is riding a season-best six-game winning streak and has won eight of its last 10 games following Sunday's 5-4 home victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Nate Robertson tossed six shutout frames for the Tigers, while Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge slugged back-to-back homers in the sixth inning.

Robertson (5-6) allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter to earn his fourth victory in five starts. The left-hander got all the support he would need during a three-run fifth inning in which Placido Polanco, Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera all had RBI hits.

The Giants enter this interleague set headed in the opposite direction. After losing two of three games at Colorado earlier last week, San Francisco returned home and suffered three straight defeats to their Bay Area rivals, the Oakland Athletics.

Oakland completed the sweep with Sunday's 5-3 victory that was fueled by a four-run sixth inning.

Kevin Correia (1-4) made his first start since April 26 and lasted 5 1/3 innings for San Francisco. The previously-injured righty allowed five runs on seven hits and walked two in a losing cause.

Emmanuel Burriss and Rich Aurilia each had two hits and a run scored to lead the Giants offensively.

San Francisco fell to 0-6 in interleague play in 2008 with Sunday's setback and are now a major league-worst 13-22 at home this season. The Giants were swept in a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox at AT&T Park from May 16-18.

Tonight's opener features an intriguing matchup between two young hard- throwing right-handers, with Giants phenom Tim Lincecum set to go head-to-head with former AL Rookie of the Year Justin Verlander.

Lincecum, who turned 24 on Sunday, has been the more impressive of the two hurlers this season. The second-year standout is 8-1 through 13 starts and one relief outing thus far, while his 1.99 earned run average trails only Cincinnati's Edinson Volquez for the best mark in the majors.

The University of Washington product was dominant once again in his latest start, which took place Wednesday at Colorado's Coors Field. Lincecum fanned nine Rockies over seven shutout innings, but wound up without a decision in a game the Giants would lose by a 1-0 count.

Over his last three starts, Lincecum has surrendered just two runs and 15 hits over a combined 21 innings. This will be his first career matchup with Detroit.

Verlander's 2008 campaign has been a disappointing one, as his 3-9 record and 4.65 ERA will attest. However, the 2007 All-Star is coming off arguably his best performance of the season this past Wednesday, when he threw a complete game to defeat Cleveland.

The 25-year-old limited the Indians to one run and four hits and did not walk a batter in Wednesday's win, which lowered Verlander's ERA to 2.50 over his last five starts. He has surrendered one run or fewer in three of those appearances.

Verlander, who has also never previously faced San Francisco, will be searching for his first road win of the year tonight. He is 0-5 with a 5.79 ERA over five away starts.

The Giants are 4-2 all-time against the Tigers and swept a three-game series from Detroit at AT&T Park from June 6-8, 2003.
