(Sports Network) - The Oakland Athletics will be seeing a familiar face on the opposing mound when they continue a three-game interleague series with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at Chase Field.
Dan Haren spent three successful seasons with Oakland from 2005-07, winning at least 14 games and amassing 163 strikeouts or more in each of those campaigns. The durable right-hander's best year came last summer, when he posted a 15-9 record and a career-high 192 strikeouts while ranking third among American League hurlers with a 3.07 earned run average. Haren also was the AL's starting pitcher in last year's All-Star Game.
With Haren in line for a significant raise this season, the cost-conscious Athletics shipped their ace to the Diamondbacks in exchange for six prospects, three of whom currently reside on Oakland's major league roster.
It's a deal that has worked out well for both clubs so far. Haren has helped Arizona to first place in the National League West by compiling a 6-4 mark and a 3.41 ERA through his first 14 starts as a Diamondback. Two of the pitchers Arizona sent over in the transaction, left-handers Dana Eveland and Greg Smith, are in the Athletics' rotation, while 22-year-old Carlos Gonzalez has recently taken over as Oakland's everyday center fielder.
Haren has not recorded a decision in either of his last two starts despite pitching well on both occasions. He allowed two runs over six innings against the New York Mets this past Thursday, five days after he held Pittsburgh to three runs and five hits through seven frames.
The 27-year-old is an excellent 6-1 with a 2.56 ERA in eight starts at Chase Field this season. In his most recent home outing, Haren twirled seven shutout innings to defeat Washington on June 1.
Arizona will be calling upon its prized offseason addition to help stop a three-game losing streak that was extended with a 15-1 shellacking by the Athletics in Monday's series opener.
Oakland battered Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb (11-3) for seven runs and nine hits over just 3 1/3 innings, the standout righty's shortest stint in four seasons. Webb also issued five walks before receiving his early exit.
The A's slugged six home runs on the evening, two of which came from Mark Ellis. The second baseman finished 3-for-4 with four RBI to help Oakland improve to 4-0 on its current six-game road trip.
Bobby Crosby went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI for the Athletics, while Ryan Sweeney had three hits and scored four times to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Rajai Davis also homered and knocked in three runs during the rout.
Oakland also received an excellent performance out of starter Justin Duchscherer (7-4), who yielded just one run and five hits without walking a batter over eight innings.
Joe Blanton toes the rubber for Oakland this evening and will be aiming to end a personal three-start losing streak. The stocky right-hander did throw a solid 6 2/3 innings against the Yankees last Thursday, but was hurt by a grand slam by Hideki Matsui that lifted New York to a 4-1 win.
Blanton is just 1-5 over his last eight starts, although he's allowed three runs or less five times during that unlucky stretch.
The former first-round pick will be opposing the Diamondbacks for the first time tonight and is 2-2 with a 4.88 ERA in four road starts this season.
Arizona swept a three-game series from the A's when these clubs last met back in Oakland during the 2006 campaign. However, the Athletics took all three matchups between the teams at Chase Field from June 6-8, 2001 and are 6-1 over their last seven games in Arizona.
