(Sports Network) - Outstanding play at home has kept the Atlanta Braves afloat in the National League East. However, the club can clinch its first .500 road trip this afternoon, when it wraps a 10-game trek and a three-game set with the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
The Braves sport a 25-11 mark at home, one of the top marks in the majors. However, prior to their current four-city trip, Atlanta was just 7-21 as the visiting team.
Its current swing got off to the usual start, as Atlanta lost three straight to the Cubs. The Braves, though, then took two of three from the AL West- leading Angels, posted a victory in a makeup game with Colorado on Monday, and have split the first two tests of this series to run their record on the trip to 4-5.
Atlanta's previous best road trip this year came on April 7-17, when it went 3-6 on a weather-shortened nine-game trek.
A late rally led to today's rubber match, as the Braves plated three runs in the ninth inning off Texas closer C.J. Wilson to post a 5-2 win last night.
Wilson (0-2) started the frame with an error that eventually led to consecutive run-scoring hits by Omar Infante and Gregor Blanco. Kelly Johnson added a fielder's choice later in the inning to knock in a third run.
Braves third baseman Chipper Jones finished 2-for-5 with a home run and kept his average pinned at .400, while Johnson drove in two runs. Mike Gonzalez, activated from the disabled list prior to the game, pitched a perfect bottom of the ninth to earn the save. He was seeing action for the first time since May 15 of last year due to Tommy John surgery he underwent on May 31, 2007.
Gerald Laird and Brandon Boggs each had an RBI for Texas, which has lost four of six and was without slugger Milton Bradley. Bradley, who owned the AL's top batting average at .330 heading into yesterday's play, sat out because of a strained left quadriceps he suffered in Tuesday's opener.
The club hopes giving Bradley off yesterday will allow him to play in today's test. His average is now third-best in the league.
Teammate Josh Hamilton had two hits last night and is batting .407 (11-for-27) over his last seven games with two homers and four RBI.
Scott Feldman will face Atlanta for the first time in his career when he toes the rubber for Texas today. The righty is 0-2 over his last six outings with a 5.35 earned run average in that span. Having not won since May 9 against Oakland, he had the worst outing of his current stretch on Friday versus the Mets.
The 25-year-old gave up seven runs (6 earned) on eight hits over just five innings for what was also the shortest outing of his six-game winless stretch. Texas is just 1-10 this year when Feldman takes the hill, and the right-hander is 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA in nine starts and two relief outings.
Right-hander Charlie Morton makes his second big-league start today for the Braves. Morton made his debut on Saturday, becoming the ninth player to start a game for the Braves this season due to injuries to Tom Glavine (elbow), John Smoltz (shoulder) and Mike Hampton (pectoral muscle).
Morton faced the Angels and posted the win after yielding three runs on five hits over six innings, walking one and striking out four. He was helped in the 9-4 victory by Brandon Jones' first career home run, as well as three RBI from former Ranger Mark Teixeira.
These two clubs last met in Arlington in 2005, with the Rangers winning two of three. The Braves did sweep a three-game series in Texas in 2002, however.
