(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles try to string back-to-back wins together this evening when they start a three-game series with the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park.
Baltimore posted one of its biggest wins of the season on Thursday, as Aubrey Huff went 4-for-5, knocking in two runs and scoring three, helping the Orioles trounce the Chicago Cubs, 11-4, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Wrigley Field.
Jay Payton added two hits and knocked in three more runs as the Orioles posted their second-highest run total this year - Baltimore scored 12 runs in a 12-2 win over the Yankees on May 20. Guillermo Quiroz went 3-for-4, knocking in two runs and scoring one for Baltimore, which became just the second team to win a series at Wrigley this season.
Radhames Liz (2-0) threw five-plus strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. It marked Liz's third consecutive start in which the Orioles posted a victory and the sixth win for Baltimore in its last nine games.
Getting the call for the O's tonight will be inconsistent righty Daniel Cabrera, who is 5-3 with a 4.46 ERA. Cabrera was tagged with the loss on Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, as he allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings.
Cabrera is 0-2 lifetime against the Nats with a 12.54 ERA in two starts.
Washington will counter with left-hander Odalis Perez, who was activated from the disabled list on Thursday. Perez, who has been sidelined since early June with shoulder tendinitis, was 2-5 with a 4.09 ERA before being shelved.
Perez lost to the O's earlier in the season and is 2-1 in four starts against them with a 4.32 ERA. He gave up six runs and 11 hits over five innings in losing to them back on May 17.
Washington snapped a four-game losing streak on Wednesday, as Jesus Flores' RBI single in the bottom of the ninth pushed the Nationals past the Los Angeles Angels, 5-4, in the finale of a three-game interleague series.
Against Scot Shields (3-2), Elijah Dukes started the ninth with a single. He advanced to second on a Lastings Milledge ground out, then scored the game- deciding run when Flores drilled a ball to the gap in right-center.
Milledge hit a two-run home run and scored a pair of runs for the Nationals, who won for just the second time in nine tries. Ronnie Belliard and Wily Mo Pena also each drove in a run.
Despite allowing the Angels' tying run in the eighth, Jon Rauch (4-1) earned the win. Starter Tim Redding allowed seven hits and two runs over six full frames.
Baltimore took two of three in the Battle of the Beltway back in May. Washington, though, won four of the six games in the series a year ago.
