(Sports Network) - Rangers Ballpark at Arlington is probably one of the last places Phillies pitcher Brett Myers wants to visit right now. Regardless, Myers will be on the hill tonight when Philadelphia opens a three-game series with the Texas Rangers.
Myers is 0-3 over his last four starts with a 5.47 earned run average, allowing eight homers in that span. On the season, Myers leads the majors with 23 homers allowed. As a full-time starter in 2006, the right-hander allowed 29 long balls in 31 starts, while he was touched for nine home runs in 48 relief outings and three starts last year.
The 28-year-old may see those struggles continue tonight, as the Rangers have hit 51 homers at home this season, second most in the American League. Texas is also tops in the majors overall in runs scored with 437.
Myers' inability to keep the ball in the park is a big reason he is just 3-9 with a 5.51 ERA in 16 starts this year. He was taken deep three times in a loss to the Angels on Saturday, allowing four runs on six hits in 7 2/3 innings overall. He also struck out seven.
The righty has never faced Texas and is 0-6 in eight road starts this season.
The Phillies, who still lead the NL East by two games over Florida, might need to back Myers with some offense, but they have been unable to do that for any of their hurlers as of late. The club has lost seven of its last eight contests, all against the AL, averaging just 1.9 runs per game in that span. The Phils are just 3-9 in interleague play this season.
Philadelphia managed just three hits while striking out 11 times in Thursday's 5-0 setback to the Athletics in a rubber match of a three-game set. Shane Victorino had two singles and Pat Burrell also added a hit, but the Phils wasted yet another quality start by Adam Eaton (2-6).
Geoff Jenkins went 0-for-3 at the plate, extending his hitless streak to 27 at-bats, while Chase Utley and Ryan Howard each went 0-for-4 at the plate.
Burrell, though, is 6-for-13 (.462) with two homers and six RBI in three career games versus Rangers, as the Phillies swept Texas in three games back on June 7-9, 2005 in the only regular-season meeting between the clubs.
Kason Gabbard will try to extend the Phillies' struggles tonight. The left- hander is 1-1 since returning from a stint at Triple-A Oklahoma, losing to the Mets on June 15 before downing the Nationals on Saturday. Gabbard held Washington to three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings of work for his first victory since April 4, his first start of the campaign.
The 26-year-old is 2-3 with a 4.96 ERA in 11 starts and has never faced the Phillies before. He is also making his first home start since May 18.
Gabbard might be pitching tonight without one of Texas' biggest weapons behind him. Josh Hamilton left in the second frame of Thursday's 7-2 loss to Houston after getting hit in the wrist by a pitch in the first inning. Hamilton, who left Tuesday's test versus Houston due to knee inflammation, had X-rays taken that were negative and is day-to-day.
Milton Bradley also returned to the starting lineup yesterday after not starting in any of the previous seven tests due to a strained left quadriceps muscle. He went 1-for-3 as a pinch-hitter in that span and leads the AL with a .333 batting average. Hamilton, meanwhile, is tops in the league with 19 homers and 76 RBI.
Ian Kinsler and Marlon Byrd both drove in a run for Texas, which ended its six-game road trip with a 3-3 mark and is 8-7 versus the NL this year.
