(Sports Network) - A pair of last-place teams start up a three-game interleague series tonight at San Diego's Petco Park, where the reeling Padres hope to get back on track in a visit from the Seattle Mariners.
San Diego has lost five straight and nine of its last 10 games, with all of its opponents over that sorry stretch having come from the American League. The Padres are just 3-12 in interleague play so far this season, the worst record in all of baseball.
The Padres have yet to win a series against an AL club in 2008 and dropped two of three tests on the road to the Mariners back in May. Seattle also won two of three clashes with the Pads in San Diego last season and are 5-1 in their last six matchups in this series.
San Diego's three most recent defeats came at the hands of the Minnesota Twins, who extended their win streak to eight games with Thursday's 4-3 triumph at Petco Park.
With the game knotted at 3-3, Minnesota's Jason Kubel roped a double to right to lead off the sixth inning and took third on Brendan Harris' flyout. The Padres then lifted starter Josh Banks in favor of Bryan Corey, who was greeted by a single from Brian Buscher which plated Kubel for the go-ahead run.
The Twins' bullpen held down the lead, with Joe Nathan fanning two in the ninth to notch his 21st save.
Banks (2-2) received the loss after being charged with four runs allowed on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Seattle's 28-50 overall record is the worst in the majors, but the team is coming off an encouraging showing in New York earlier in the week. The Mariners won their first two meetings with the Mets before suffering an 8-2 setback in Wednesday's series finale.
Jeremy Reed went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Seattle, which is 3-3 thus far on a nine-game road trip. Ichiro Suzuki and Willie Bloomquist knocked in the Mariners' lone runs.
Seattle's Miguel Batista (3-10), making his first start since June 7, was shelled for eight runs (4 earned) on five hits and issued five walks in a horrid 2 2/3-inning stint. The struggling veteran was taking the place of Erik Bedard, who was scratched due to back spasms.
The Mariners will be counting on a better showing from Jarrod Washburn tonight. The seasoned lefty has been pitching well lately, although he doesn't have a win to show for those efforts.
Washburn has allowed just four earned runs in 17 2/3 innings over his last three starts, but has recorded no-decisions in each of those games due to a either a lack of run support or a ineffective bullpen.
The 33-year-old held Atlanta to one run and struck out a season-high eight over 5 2/3 innings on Saturday, leaving the contest with a 3-1 lead. However, the Braves scored twice against Batista in the ninth to eventually pull out a 5-4 win.
Washburn, who hasn't won since May 5, owns a 1-0 record with a 3.72 earned run average in four career games (3 starts) against San Diego. He did not face the Padres earlier this season.
Randy Wolf gets the call for San Diego this evening and is seeking to end a a string of back-to-back losses. The left-hander did strike out a season-best 10 hitters against Detroit this past Sunday, but was still hung with a defeat after surrendering three runs -- two earned -- in six innings.
That was a significant improvement over Wolf's previous start, a four-inning stint at Yankee Stadium on June 17 in which he was tagged for seven runs (5 earned) over four frames.
Wolf has been strong at home this season, having amassed a 4-2 record and a 2.52 ERA in eight Petco Park starts. His only career matchup with the Mariners came on May 17, with the 31-year-old taking a loss after allowing three runs in 6 1/3 innings.
