(Sports Network) - Cha Seung Baek will face his former team this evening when the San Diego Padres battle the Seattle Mariners in the second matchup of a three-game set at Petco Park.
The Padres acquired Baek from the Mariners back on May 29th, and in return the Padres sent pitcher Jared Wells to Seattle. Since being acquired, the right- hander is 0-2 in four starts, but does have a win in a relief appearance.
The last time Baek toed the rubber for SD, the 28-year-old was battered by the Detroit Tigers, allowing six runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. The lone bright spot in the 7-5 loss was Baek's seven strikeouts.
Carlos Silva will take the ball for Seattle this evening, but the right-hander is mired in a horrible slump. Silva, who started the year 3-0, has lost nine of his last 10 starts, including seven straight.
Silva's woes continued this past Sunday, as the 29-year-old lasted just four innings in an 8-3 loss to Atlanta. In the setback, Silva surrendered four runs on nine hits, three of which went for home runs.
The Venezuelan native has struggled away from home this year, and in nine road starts he has a pathetic 1-5 ledger with an equally bad 6.31 ERA. In 51 1/3 road innings, Silva has surrendered a whopping 74 hits and 38 runs.
Yesterday, Jarrod Washburn claimed his first victory since May 5 with his longest outing of the season, lifting the Mariners to a 5-2 decision over the reeling Padres.
Washburn (3-7) worked an impressive 7 2/3 innings, surrendering just seven hits, one being a two-run homer to Chase Headley in the seventh, helping to overcome a Seattle franchise record 18 men left on base in a nine-inning game. The lefty walked one with two strikeouts for his first victory in 10 starts.
Adrian Beltre drove in three runs on two singles while Jose Lopez and Ichiro Suzuki were both 3-for-5 with a run scored for Seattle, which has won three of its last four.
Randy Wolf (5-7) struggled from the start, exiting with 97 pitches after just 3 1/3 innings. The left-hander allowed three runs - two earned - on eight hits and tied a season-high with five walks in the loss, his third straight.
Headley accounted for both Padre runs, crushing a two-run homer and Brian Giles was 3-for-4 with a triple for San Diego, which has dropped six straight with just one win in its last 11 contests, all against the American League.
