(Sports Network) - Andy Sonnanstine tries to run his unbeaten streak to six starts this afternoon when the Tampa Bay Rays close a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
Sonnanstine, who is 8-3 with a 4.85 earned run average on the season, received a no-decision on Tuesday against the Florida Marlins, as he allowed two runs and six hits in five innings.
The 25-year-old right-hander has allowed three earned runs or less in his last six starts.
Pittsburgh will counter with left-hander Tom Gorzelanny, who is 6-6 with a 6.43 ERA. Gorzelanny won for the second time in three starts on Tuesday against the New York Yankees, as he surrendered three runs and six hits in six innings.
Gorzelanny, who has never faced the Rays, is 5-1 in his eight home starts this season.
On Saturday, Tampa had its four-game winning streak stopped when Jason Bay's home run in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted Pittsburgh to a 4-3 win.
Jason Hammel pitched a scoreless 12th inning and returned to the mound for the Rays in the 13th, getting Nate McLouth to foul out and Freddy Sanchez to line out to begin the frame.
But Bay stepped up and crushed a solo homer to left-center field to end the game, and give the Pirates just their second win in the past five games.
John Van Benschoten (1-2) took the win after tossing a scoreless top of the 13th while Ty Taubenheim was solid in a six-inning start. Taubenheim, who made his Pirates debut after appearing in 13 games with Toronto over the past two seasons, gave up two runs on seven hits.
Taubenheim also doubled and drove in a run, while Adam LaRoche and Doug Mientkiewicz added an RBI each.
Hammel (3-3) took the loss for Tampa Bay, which had won four in a row. Rays starter Edwin Jackson gave up three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 frames.
Evan Longoria and Dioner Navarro each drove in a run for the Rays, while Jonny Gomes had a pinch-hit home run in defeat.
Pittsburgh won two of three games at home versus Tampa Bay from June 10-12 of the 2005 campaign and is 5-3 in its eight meetings with the Rays. The Pirates are 5-8 in interleague play this season, while the Rays own an 11-6 record.
The Pirates also sport a 62-102 mark against the AL, compared to Tampa's 85-110 ledger versus the National League.
