(Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles try to continue their recent dominance of the Kansas City Royals this evening, when the two teams start a four-game series at Camden Yards.
The Orioles took three of four from the Royals earlier in the year and have beaten them in 15 of the last 17 meetings. Kansas City has also dropped seven straight in Baltimore.
After becoming just the second team this season to win a series at Wrigley Field, the Orioles failed to carry the momentum into their Beltway Series with the lowly Washington Nationals, dropping two of three, including a heart- breaking 3-2, 12-inning setback in Sunday's rubber match at Nationals Park.
In the top of the 12th, Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff hit back-to-back singles to lead off before a Kevin Millar lineout and a Luke Scott strikeout left the runners on first and second with two outs. Adam Jones, however, came through with a single to right allowing Markakis to score easily and give the Orioles a 2-1 lead.
George Sherrill (2-3) then struck out Pete Orr and got Paul Lo Duca to ground out in the home-half, but Dmitri Young drew a pinch-hit walk. Ronnie Belliard followed with a shot over the left field wall for the victory.
Scott was 2-for-5 with a solo home run for Baltimore, while Jones was 1- for-5 with an RBI in the game and 8-for-13 with four runs in the three-game series.
Jeremy Guthrie pitched seven innings allowing just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out four for the Orioles, who have lost five of eight.
Getting the call for the O's tonight will be left-hander Brian Burres, who hasn't started since beating Houston on June 19. He gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of that one, as he improved to 6-5 on the season.
Burres was scratched from his last start on Wednesday with a stomach virus, but gave up a run in an inning of relief on Thursday.
The 27-year-old hurler lost to the Royals earlier in the season and is 0-1 in two games against them with a 5.14 ERA.
Kansas City, meanwhile, has dropped two in a row after a six-game winning streak. The Royals were denied a win in their 1-70 series with the St. Louis Cardinals, falling 9-6 on Sunday at Kauffman Stadium.
Brian Bannister (7-7) was roughed up for seven runs on nine hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings for Kansas City, which fell for only the third time in their last 14 games.
Zack Greinke gets the call tonight for the Royals, as he tries to win his third straight start. Greinke defeated the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, surrendering three runs and nine hits in six innings to run his record to 7-4 on the season to go along with a 3.40 ERA.
Greinke, who has given up just four runs in his last three starts spanning 20 innings, is 0-2 lifetime against the Orioles with a 10.64 ERA in four games, two of which have been starts.
Kansas City, which will be starting an eight-game road trip tonight, has won its last five away from home and a win tonight would give the Royals their first six-game road tear since 1999.
