(Sports Network) - Toronto right-hander A.J. Burnett heads to the mound tonight as one of the most discussed pre-trade deadline commodities, as the Blue Jays host the Baltimore Orioles in the middle game of a three-game series at Rogers Centre.
A 10-game winner in each of the last two seasons in Canada, Burnett has won three of his last five decisions and is increasingly the subject of rumors now that Cleveland has dealt ace southpaw CC Sabathia to Milwaukee and Oakland sent Rich Harden to the Chicago Cubs.
The Arkansas native is a five-time double-digit winner, including three times during his National League days with the Florida Marlins, including a role on that franchise's 2003 World Series championship squad.
He's 5-1 in seven career starts against the Orioles, though he was beaten, 9-5, in his last meeting with them on June 7 in Toronto. Overall, in 47 2/3 innings against Baltimore, Burnett has allowed 40 hits and 24 runs while walking 22 batters and striking out 43.
For Baltimore, second-year southpaw Garrett Olson will try to make it three starts without a loss.
The 24-year-old Californian defeated Washington, 9-1, on June 28 before getting a no-decision five days later in the Orioles' 10-7 loss to Kansas City.
He'd gone three starts without a win over the previous two weeks while being touched for 17 hits and 14 runs in 15 innings.
Olson lost his lone career start against Toronto last season, giving up six hits and five runs in 2 2/3 innings.
On Tuesday, Scott Rolen's ground ball in the bottom of the ninth went through the legs of shortstop Freddie Bynum, allowing Alex Rios to score and cap a four-run comeback and give the Blue Jays a 7-6 victory.
B.J. Ryan (2-3) picked up the win with a perfect ninth inning while Dustin McGowan went four innings, giving up four runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the start for Toronto, which won for just the second time in six games. McGowan left the game due to right shoulder soreness.
Rios had a three-run triple and scored twice while Vernon Wells was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Blue Jays in the opener of the three-game series.
Daniel Cabrera allowed four runs on six hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out three for the Orioles, who have lost three in a row. Jim Johnson (2-3) allowed one unearned run on two walks and no hits while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss.
Nick Markakis was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Aubrey Huff homered for Baltimore.
These two clubs have now split six meetings so far this year.
