(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Braves will try to snap out of their season- long road funk in tonight's opener of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
The Braves began a six-game road trip with a three-test set in Los Angeles, losing two of three to the Dodgers and dropping their road record in 2008 to 13-31, the fewest away wins by any team in the majors this season.
Atlanta lost Wednesday's game by a score of 2-1, increasing the Braves' major league-record road losing streak in one-run games to 24, which dates back to August 10, 2007. Atlanta is 5-22 this year in one-run games, including 0-17 on the road.
The club is batting just .241 on the road this year, and its 167 runs scored as the visiting team is ranked 15th in the National League. That poor offensive output has nullified Atlanta's team earned run average of 3.86 on the road, second-best in the NL.
Atlanta's Tim Hudson (9-7) retired the first 12 batters faced on Wednesday and allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings as the Braves lost for the eighth time in their last 11 games. Jeff Francoeur accounted for Atlanta's sole run with a homer in the eighth.
Francoeur is 2-for-8 (.250) in two games back in the majors since a short stint with Double-A Mississippi, and he also clubbed his first homer since June 12 on Wednesday.
Jo-Jo Reyes goes for the Braves tonight and the young left-hander has lost his last three starts while pitching to a 5.93 ERA. Reyes, who hasn't made it past the fifth inning in two of his last three outings, gave up four runs on six hits over 4 1/3 frames of a loss against Houston on Saturday.
The 23-year-old is 3-7 with a 4.40 ERA this year, but has a 2.52 ERA in five road starts. Reyes, however, also has a 9.53 ERA in two career starts versus the Padres without a decision. He faced them at home on May 8 and allowed two runs, including one earned, in 2 2/3 innings before exiting early due to a blister on his left index finger.
Jake Peavy counters for the Padres and halted a three-start winless streak (0-2) last time out. He threw seven scoreless innings versus Arizona on Saturday, his fifth start since missing about a month of action due to a strained right elbow. The 27-year-old gave up three hits and two walks while fanning six versus the Diamondbacks.
The right-handed Peavy is 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA in 14 starts this year and has a 1.64 ERA in eight home starts. He is 1-4 with a 4.70 ERA in six career starts versus Atlanta.
Atlanta's Chipper Jones is a career .500 hitter (6-for-12) against Peavy with three homers and four RBI.
San Diego has lost three of four and dropped a rubber match with Florida, 5-2, on Wednesday. Cha Seung Baek (2-5) gave up three runs on six hits in five innings of work in the loss.
Scott Hairston went 2-for-3 with a solo homer, while Chase Headley drove in San Diego's other run. Hairston has five homers in his last five games and is hitting a torrid .550 (11-for-20) with eight RBI and six runs scored over a six-game hitting streak.
San Diego played again without Brian Giles, who has been out of action since Sunday due to a strained right hamstring. Giles, who leads the club with a .301 average, is doubtful for tonight's game.
The Braves swept a three-games set with San Diego at home from May 6-8 and have won 16 of their last 20 versus the Padres, including seven of the last nine at Petco Park.
