San Diego Padres (43-70) at New York Mets (59-53), 7:10 p.m.

(Sports Network) - Pedro Martinez can make it five starts overall without a loss and 11 career victories against San Diego tonight, when the Mets host the visiting Padres in the middle encounter of a three-game series at Shea Stadium

Now 36, Martinez has been brittle in his return to the majors after being limited to five starts last season. He's missed two periods of extended time and has pitched a full six innings just twice in his last 10 starts.

Still, the right-hander is 1-0 with three no-decisions in his last four starts, pitching 19 1/3 innings while allowing 18 hits and eight runs.

In that stretch, his earned run average has tumbled from an ugly 7.39 to a still lofty 6.16.

Martinez is 10-3 with a save in 24 lifetime games against the Padres - 17 starts - and has allowed 47 runs while striking out 122 batters in 124 2/3 innings.

Korean-born righty Cha Seung Baek faces the Mets for the second time since coming to the National League from Seattle. He scattered seven hits and allowed a run in six innings of the Padres' 2-1 win on June 7, though he picked up a no-decision.

Baek has split his last two decisions overall, allowing 15 hits and eight earned runs in 9 2/3 innings, beating Pittsburgh, 6-5, before losing to Arizona, 7-3.

Baek is 3-0 on the road this season with a 3.86 earned run average in 39 2/3 innings.

On Tuesday, Fernando Tatis clubbed two home runs and drove in four, as New York overcame a late-inning charge to secure a 6-5 win. Carlos Beltran finished 2-for-4 and scored twice for the Mets, who snapped a four-game losing streak.

Dan Murphy recorded his first career double and collected the first RBI of his career.

Mike Pelfrey (10-7) won for the eighth time in his last nine decisions, as he gave up nine hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

The Mets are third in the tight National League East, two games out of first place and a half-game behind the second-place Marlins. New York picked up a game on the first-place Phillies after Florida posted an 8-2 win in Philadelphia Tuesday.

Prior to the game, the Mets placed closer Billy Wagner on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left forearm and recalled pitcher Ruddy Lugo from Triple- A New Orleans.

Jody Gerut was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer for San Diego, which has dropped five of its last six contests. Kevin Kouzmanoff and Adrian Gonzalez each belted a solo home run.

Chris Young went 5 1/3 frames and allowed two runs on just one hit with five walks and five strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision. Mike Adams (1-1) surrendered two runs in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss.

San Diego swept a four-game set from the Mets earlier in the year and has won eight of the 11 matchups since the start of last season.
