San Diego Padres (45-72) at Colorado Rockies (53-66), 3:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - Former postseason hero Livan Hernandez makes his first appearance with Colorado today when the Rockies host the San Diego Padres in the finale of a three-game series at Coors Field.

Hernandez, who starred for the Florida Marlins en route to a World Series title in 1997, began the 2008 season with the Minnesota Twins and was 10-8 with a 5.48 earned run average in 23 starts before he was waived last week upon the return of starter Francisco Liriano.

The Rockies put in a claim and will use the now 33-year-old veteran as they chase a second straight National League title.

Hernandez was an 11-game winner with Arizona last season and has 144 career wins in 374 appearances. He's 11-4 in 22 lifetime starts against the Padres with a 3.98 ERA in 144 2/3 innings.

Lanky right-hander Chris Young starts for the third time since an extended stay on the disabled list for the Padres.

The 6-foot-10, 278-pounder was shelved from May 21 through July 29 after he was struck by a line drive off the bat of Albert Pujols and suffered a broken nose and a skull fracture.

He's pitched 10 1/3 innings in two starts since returning and has allowed three hits and two runs in 10 1/3 innings with seven walks and 13 strikeouts. Young has gotten no-decisions in both games, each of which were lost by San Diego.

Young, who is 5-1 lifetime against Colorado, beat the Rockies, 6-1, on May 11 with six innings of five-hit ball with seven strikeouts.

On Saturday, Chase Headley finished 2-for-5 and knocked in two runs and Greg Maddux tossed six solid innings, as the Padres defeated the Rockies, 8-3.

Adrian Gonzalez clubbed a two-run homer for the Padres, who snapped a two-game slide. Luis Rodriguez was 3-for-5 and scored twice, while Nick Hundley added a two-run double.

Maddux (6-8) allowed two runs on six hits to pick up his third straight win after a career-long 14-start winless streak (May 15-July 23).

Brad Hawpe had three hits and Chris Iannetta belted a solo homer for Colorado, which has dropped three of its last four games.

Aaron Cook (14-8) took the loss after he was roughed up for six runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Colorado has won six of 11 against San Diego this season.
