(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers continue a 10-game homestand tonight, when they open a four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park.
The Tigers began the residency with three games versus Oakland and rebounded to win the final two tests of that set after losing the opener. Following a 10-run outburst on Saturday, the Tigers rolled to a 6-1 victory in Sunday's finale.
Magglio Ordonez had a pair of hits and drove in two runs and Curtis Granderson added his 15th homer of the season, while Ryan Raburn and Placido Polanco knocked in a run each. Raburn got the start in place of Marcus Thames, who sat out Sunday's game due to a sore right shoulder. Carlos Guillen also missed his second straight contest due to lower back spasms that forced him out of Friday's game. Both injured players are day-to-day.
Nate Robertson (7-8) allowed just one run over 7 2/3 innings to pick up his first victory since June 21, while Fernando Rodney recorded the final four outs to pick up his third save and improve Detroit to 31-23 at home this year.
With Robertson hopefully back on track, Detroit hopes the same thing happens for Justin Verlander tonight. The 2006 American League Rookie of the Year has lost each of his last three starts, giving up 18 runs over 17 1/3 innings for a 9.35 earned run average in that span.
Verlander, 8-12 on the season with a 4.56 ERA, faced the White Sox on Wednesday and allowed five runs on six hits over 7 2/3 frames, adding eight strikeouts.
The 25-year-old righty has never encountered the Blue Jays.
Verlander faces a Toronto offense that struggled in its weekend set with the Cleveland Indians. The Blue Jays managed just four runs in getting swept by the Tribe, getting blanked in Sunday's finale, 4-0.
Marco Scutaro, Alex Rios, Lyle Overbay and John McDonald each had two hits for Toronto, which had outscored the Athletics, 21-9, in a four-game sweep prior to the series with the Indians.
Toronto hits the road for seven straight, but will do so without Scott Rolen. The third baseman, who is hitting .252 this year in 88 games, landed on the disabled list following Sunday's loss due to an ailing left shoulder, the same shoulder that has undergone three prior surgeries.
The Blue Jays did get Vernon Wells back into the lineup after activating him from the 15-day DL prior to yesterdays' game. He served as the designated hitter on Sunday and went 0-for-4 after returning from a left hamstring strain suffered back on July 9. Wells, who also missed 26 games earlier this year due to a right wrist injury, is hitting .283 with nine homers and 42 RBI in 65 games this year and is just a career .245 hitter against Detroit.
Toronto starts Shaun Marcum tonight, and the righty is coming off his first win since May 26, a stretch of seven starts between victories that also includes a stint on the DL. Marcum held Oakland to a run on three hits over seven innings on Wednesday, improving to 6-5 this year with a 3.44 ERA. He had allowed 20 runs over his previous four outings.
The 26-year-old had faced Detroit three times in a relief role before starting against the club on April 21. Marcum lost that test, allowing five runs (4 earned) on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.
The Tigers and Blue Jays split a four-game set in Toronto on April 18-21.
