Toronto Blue Jays (61-59) at Detroit Tigers (58-61), 7:05 p.m.

(Sports Network) - With a healthy Vernon Wells, the Toronto Blue Jays aren't ready to give up on the American League Wild Card just yet. The Blue Jays try for their third straight win over the Detroit Tigers tonight in the continuation of a four-game series at Comerica Park.

The Blue Jays have taken the first two tests of this set to give them wins in six of their last nine games. That has them eight contests back of the wild card-leading Boston Red Sox.

Wells has four hits in 12 at-bats since returning from a left hamstring injury, posting three RBI and a double in that span. In his career versus Detroit, the center fielder is hitting .255 with five homers, 30 RBI and 23 strikeouts.

Wells had a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh inning in Tuesday's 6-4 victory, while Adam Lind added a solo homer for Toronto. Joe Inglett and Marco Scutaro also had an RBI each.

Though Wells is back in the lineup, Toronto is playing without Gold Glove third baseman Scott Rolen, who is on the disabled list because of an ailing left shoulder. Scutaro, though, is 5-for-13 (.385) in his last three games replacing Rolen at the hot corner.

A.J. Burnett (15-9) won his fifth straight start after going six innings and yielding four runs on eight hits, while Jays reliever Scott Downs ran his scoreless innings streak to 17 2/3 with a perfect eighth. B.J. Ryan earned his 23rd save with a perfect ninth.

Toronto will try tonight to back David Purcey, who makes his sixth career start. The young left-hander has lost his last two outings, although he pitched well his last time out.

Against Cleveland this past Friday, Purcey allowed three runs on six hits over six innings with a career-high eight strikeouts. On the season, he is 1-3 with a 7.40 earned run average.

Purcey has also struggled in two road starts, allowing 13 runs in eight innings (a 14.63 ERA) while losing both tests.

The 26-year-old made his major league debut versus Detroit on April 18, getting a no-decision after allowing one run on two hits and seven walks over 4 1/3 innings.

Gary Sheffield hit a pair of solo home runs last night for Detroit, which has lost nine of its last 12 games to fall 10 1/2 games off the wild-card pace. Magglio Ordonez had a solo shot of his own to run his hitting streak to 11 games.

Ordonez is hitting .304 (11-for-46) with nine RBI over his run, which began one game after he had a nine-game hitting streak halted. Ordonez hit an eye- popping .442 (19-for-43) on that tear and is a career .265 hitter against Toronto.

Detroit did see third baseman Carlos Guillen exit last night's game early due to left lower back tightness. Guillen missed Saturday and Sunday's games against Oakland due to lower back spasms.

Kenny Rogers, 8-9 with a 4.92 ERA this year, will try to avoid a fourth straight losing start tonight for the Tigers. The 43-year-old gave up four runs (3 earned) on six hits in seven innings of a setback to Oakland on Friday, running his ERA over his skid to 8.44.

Rogers, though, defeated Toronto on April 18 for his first win of the season, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks over 6 2/3 innings. Lifetime against the Blue Jays, the left-hander is 15-9 with a save and a 3.77 ERA in 56 outings, including 29 starts.

Wells is a career .308 (12-for-39) batter versus Rogers with a homer and six RBI.

The Tigers and Blue Jays split a four-game set in Toronto from April 18-21.
