(Sports Network) - The Blue Jays have never swept a four-game series with the Tigers. Toronto gets a chance to do just that today, when it wraps a four-game set with Detroit at Comerica Park.
Toronto has outscored Detroit 17-9 over the first three games of this set heading into today's finale. A victory for the Blue Jays will give them their first sweep of any kind over the Tigers since they took all three games of a series from September 16-18, 2003.
Toronto has also won five of seven against Detroit this year after these clubs split a four-game set in Toronto from April 18-21.
In just his fourth game back from missing time due to a hamstring injury, Vernon Wells clubbed his fifth career grand slam in a 4-3 victory over Detroit. Wells is now 5-for-15 (.333) with a double, homer and seven RBI since coming off the disabled list.
David Purcey (2-3) allowed just two hits over six shutout innings before a 49- minute rain delay ended his night. Scott Downs, who came into the game with a 17 2/3 shutout innings streak, allowed two base runners in the ninth before leaving with an ankle injury. The Tigers then plated three runs with Brandon League on the mound, but he managed to hold on and post his first save of the season.
The victory was Toronto's eighth in its last 11 road games, pushing the club to 28-33 as the visiting team this year. The Blue Jays can make their season more interesting, as they head to Boston next for three games. Toronto trails the Red Sox by eight games in the American League wild card race.
Toronto hopes that Jesse Litsch was able to straighten himself out in Triple-A Syracuse, as he returns to the rotation tonight. Litsch had lost three straight starts prior to his demotion, pitching to a 10.66 earned run average in that time.
The 23-year-old righty went 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three starts with Syracuse, striking out 18 and walking four. He is 8-7 with a 4.46 ERA in 20 games (19 starts) this year and has never faced Detroit.
The Tigers turn to Armando Galarraga to avoid a sweep. The right-hander won his third straight decision on Saturday against Oakland, allowing two runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. That outing gave him a 2.52 ERA over his last four starts.
Galarraga has emerged as one of the top rookie hurlers this year, with the 26- year-old going 10-4 with a 3.23 ERA in 21 games, all but one starts. He faced Toronto for the first time in his career on April 21, getting the win behind 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball.
Magglio Ordonez extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a pair of hits in yesterday's loss. He is batting .320 (16-for-50) with nine RBI over his run, which began one game after he had a nine-game hitting streak halted.
Edgar Renteria finished with a two-run double for the Tigers, who have dropped three straight. Miguel Cabrera also drove in a run in defeat, while Kenny Rogers (8-10) took the loss, his fourth straight.
Third baseman Carlos Guillen, who has been in and out of the lineup over the last week due to his back, missed yesterday's game with a pinched nerve in his lower back. He is expected to be out of action for the next few days.
The Tigers are 2-4 on a 10-game homestand that next sees Baltimore come to town.
