(Sports Network) - The Washington Nationals will try to run their season-high winning streak to six games this afternoon, as they conclude a three-game set with the struggling Atlanta Braves at Nationals Park.
Washington began its current win streak with a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers before winning the first two games of this set. The Nationals, one of the worst offensive teams in baseball this year, have scored 34 runs over their winning run and can sweep Atlanta in three games today for the first time since March 31-April 3, 2003.
The Nats are last in the National League East, eight games back of fourth- place Atlanta, but are now 9-4 versus the Braves this year. Washington is 10-26 versus the rest of the NL East.
Saturday's contest went to extra innings, with Elijah Dukes drawing a bases- loaded walk off Atlanta's Vladimir Nunez with two outs in the 10th inning, leading to Washington's 9-8 victory.
Anderson Hernandez went 3-for-5 with three RBI and scored the game-winning run for the Nationals, whose winning streak has opened a nine-game homestand that next sees a visit from Philadelphia.
Chipper Jones hit his 20th homer of the season for the Braves to join Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews as the only other player to hit at least 20 home runs for 14 consecutive years since the start of their careers. Jones is hitting .359 on the season, second best in the majors behind only St. Louis' Albert Pujols (.362).
Brian McCann and Martin Prado also went deep in Atlanta's third loss in four games and 15th in the last 19 tests. The club couldn't overcome the wildness of Nunez, who walked three batters -- one intentionally -- and threw a wild pitch in the 10th.
The Nats suddenly hot bats will try to feast on the struggling Jair Jurrjens today. The 22-year-old was one of the Braves' biggest surprises this year and is a solid 11-9 with a 3.56 earned run average. However, the youngster is just 1-4 over his last five starts and has yielded 10 runs over his last two outings.
Jurrjens got a no-decision versus Florida on Tuesday after giving up a season- high six runs on six hits in just three innings of work.
The right-hander is 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA in two career starts versus Washington and allowed five runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in a loss against them on July 19.
For the Nationals, Collin Balester makes his first career start against the Braves. The 22-year-old halted a three-start losing streak on Tuesday versus the Dodgers, holding them to a run on five hits over five innings. That improved him to 3-6 on the season with a 4.70 ERA.
