MLB Game Summary - NY Yankees at Tampa Bay

Final Score: NY Yankees 6 - Tampa Bay 7

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - John Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs as the Tampa Bay Rays topped the New York Yankees, 7-6, in a wild Grapefruit League contest that saw five players ejected and a benches-clearing incident in the bottom of the second inning.

Akinori Iwamura and Carl Crawford each collected a pair of hits and crossed the plate once, while Cliff Floyd went 1-for-3 with a double and a run batted in. Rays starter Andy Sonnastine hurled three shutout innings, surrendering just one hit, and the Rays scored three runs off Jonathan Albaladejo in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out the win.

Jorge Posada knocked in three runs for the Yankees, while Robinson Cano picked up a pair of hits, including a double. Starter Heath Phillips allowed two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning before being ejected for grazing Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria with a fastball. Phillips was starting in place of Andy Pettitte, who was scratched from his scheduled start with elbow irritation.

The benches cleared in the second inning after Yankees first baseman Shelley Duncan slid hard into Iwamura at second base after being easily thrown out attempting to stretch a single into a double. Duncan was immediately tackled from behind by Rays outfielder Jonny Gomes. The benches were emptied, and Duncan, Gomes, and Yankees coaches Bobby Meacham and Kevin Long were ejected because of the incident.

The incident was yet another display of the bad blood that has built between the two teams during spring training. It came four days after New York manager Joe Girardi complained about Tampa Bay's overagressive play after a home-plate collision that resulted in a fractured right wrist to Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli.
