Peoria, AZ (Sports Network) - Gerald Laird knocked in the winning run for the Texas Rangers in a 12-7 victory over the San Diego Padres, part of a six-run eighth inning by Texas that proved to be the difference in an offensive Cactus League clash.

Michael Young went 3-for-5, had three RBI and scored once for the Rangers, and Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer off Padres starter Jake Peavy. Meanwhile, Vicente Padilla was roughed up through six innings of work, surrendering five earned runs on 10 hits, including two longballs.

Brian Giles swatted a solo homer for San Diego, as did Peavy, though the ace of the staff didn't fare nearly as well on the rubber, getting chased after just three innings. He yielded four earned runs on four hits, with a walk and five strikeouts.
