National League Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Atlanta

Final Score: Pittsburgh 4 - Atlanta 3

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Xavier Nady's RBI single in the 10th inning put Pittsburgh ahead, and Matt Capps held Atlanta scoreless in the bottom half, as the Pirates edged the Braves, 4-3, at Turner Field.

Capps was the last of five Pittsburgh pitchers, who shut down an Atlanta offense that had scored 21 runs in the first two games of the series. Zach Duke gave up 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings, but just three runs, two of which were earned.

Tyler Yates (1-0) worked a one-hit ninth inning to pick up the win for the Pirates, who also won the three-game series. Pittsburgh put up six overall hits, with Jose Bautista, Nate McLouth, and Ronny Paulino all doubling.

Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson had a hit and an RBI, but left the game in the seventh inning with a strained left calf. He is listed as day-to-day and will be re-evaluated on Friday.

Atlanta's night was marked with the absence of Mike Hampton, who was expected to make his first start in nearly two years, but injured his left pectoral muscle during a warm-up.

The 35-year-old Hampton has missed the past two seasons after undergoing major elbow procedures, and hasn't pitched in an MLB game since 2005. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

"Nobody's more disappointed than I am," Hampton said. "I was talking with the doctors; it's something that's minor, and we don't want to give it the chance to turn into something major."

In his place, Jeff Bennett started and went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits. The Braves used seven pitchers, and Chris Resop (0-1) got tagged with the loss after giving up Nady's single.

Chipper Jones went 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Mark Kotsay went 2-for-5 with a triple for Atlanta.

In the 10th inning, Nyjer Morgan led off with a walk for Pittsburgh against Resop. He moved to second on a sacrifice, and Jason Bay followed with a walk of his own. Resop was then moved to left field.

Left-hander Royce Ring was brought in to pitch to Adam LaRoche. Resop came back to the mound after Ring struck out LaRoche, and worked a 1-1 count to Nady.

Nady knocked the third pitch to center field to plate Morgan, and put the Pirates up, 4-3.

"I think you just gotta have good at-bats," Nady said, when asked if he approached the at-bat differently than others. "You've got to bear down mentally. You're obviously trying to do everything you can in order to help your ball club win."

Capps gave up a two-out triple to Kotsay in the bottom of the 10th, but induced a Brian McCann ground out to end the game.

The Pirates backed Duke's strong start with a pair of runs early in the contest. McClouth led off the third with a double, and scored after the next two batters grounded out.

Back-to-back doubles from Bautista and Paulino in the fourth inning gave the Pirates a two-run lead.

The Braves, though, finally got to Duke in the sixth inning, and put up four hits during a rally. Jones and Jeff Francoeur scored on RBI singles, and Kotsay cross the plate for the go-ahead score on a fielding error by Wilson. Martin Prado walked in the next at-bat to load the bases.

Duke was taken out in favor of Franquelis Osoria, who got Yunel Escobar to strike out, ending the Atlanta threat.

Pittsburgh evened the game at 3-3 in the seventh inning after Wilson plated Chris Gomez with a single to left, after Gomez reached second on a passed ball. Wilson, though, pulled up limp going to first, and had to leave the game.
