Final Score: NY Yankees 2 - Kansas City 5
Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Ross Gload went 2-for-3 with two RBI as Kansas City upended the New York Yankees, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium.
Mark Grudzielanek and Mark Teahen each collected two hits and drove in a run for the Royals, who were victorious in their home opener and have won two straight. Joey Gathright went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and also stole three bases, while Alex Gordon also had two hits and scored twice.
KC starter Brian Bannister (2-0) allowed five hits and a pair of runs over five innings to notch the win. Joakim Soria picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.
"I think as a starting staff, we put a lot of pressure on our shoulders to keep our team in games," Bannister said of the rotation being the key to a 5-2 start.
Wilson Betemit and Johnny Damon knocked in runs for the Yankees, whose two- game win streak came to an end. The Bombers were without shortstop Derek Jeter, who did not play due to a strained left quad suffered in Monday's game. Jeter could miss up to a week with the injury.
Phil Hughes (0-1) took the loss, charged with six hits and three runs over three-plus innings, fanning two but walking four.
"I knew it was going to be a battle because I really didn't know where my fastball was going," Hughes said.
KC dented Hughes for a run in the first. Gathright led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored when Teahen laced a double to the gap in left-center.
The Yankees struck back in the second to take a 2-1 lead on a Betemit RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Damon.
John Buck's sacrifice fly in the home half pulled the Royals even, then Hughes' control wavered. He walked Tony Pena, who stole second, hit Gathright on the leg, then walked Grudzielanek before getting Teahen looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning.
Kansas City loaded the bases again in the third and failed to score, but pushed across a run in the fourth as Gathright singled, stole second and third, then scored on Grudzielanek's base hit.
Gload's two-run single to left in the fifth gave the Royals a 5-2 edge, and Ron Mahay worked out of trouble in the sixth, retiring Damon after New York had men on first and second with two down.
Leo Nunez struck out a pair in a scoreless eighth inning and Soria retired the side in order to close out the game.
