Final Score: Philadelphia 5 - NY Mets 2
Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Jayson Werth's run-scoring single in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Philadelphia spoiled New York's final home opener at Shea Stadium by downing the Mets, 5-2.
New York has played at Shea since 1964, but will move into the brand-new Citi Field next season.
Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley all knocked in a run apiece for the Phillies, who beat the Mets for the ninth consecutive time. Rollins was forced to leave the game with a sprained left ankle, however. The reigning National League MVP, was injured sliding into second base in the top of the eighth inning and was replaced by Eric Bruntlett.
Utley tied a major-league record and set a new franchise mark by being hit by three pitches - two from Mets starter Oliver Perez - in his 1-for-2 afternoon at the plate.
This was the first meeting between the division foes this season but the Phillies went a gaudy 12-6 versus New York last year, including wins in each of the last eight meetings.
That includes a three-game sweep at Shea in mid-September that was part of the Mets' epic collapse that cost them the division title and a playoff spot. New York held a seven-game edge with 17 games to play, but went on to lose 12 of its final 17 games, giving the Phils their first division title since 1993.
"Last year's over. We have to play them 18 more times," noted Mets manager Willie Randolph. "Anytime you play in the division you want to play well and beat the guys you have to beat."
Veteran Jamie Moyer (1-0) started on the hill for Philadelphia and allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. Chad Durbin, J.C. Romero and Tom Gordon finished things with an inning of scoreless relief apiece.
"That was a huge turnaround," Rollins said of Moyer's performance. "To hold a team down like this in their home opener. Jamie came out and controlled their bats, made pitches when he needed to."
Carlos Delgado was 2-for-4 with a solo homer but made a costly error for the Mets, who have dropped three straight games.
Perez allowed just three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work but was let down by his bullpen. Scott Schoeneweis (0-1) lost it after giving up three runs -- two earned in just two-thirds of an inning.
Down 2-0, the Phillies finally broke through against Schoeneweis in the seventh. Rollins started things with a one-out single and quickly moved to second on Shane Victorino's base hit up the middle. Schoeneweis then plunked Utley to load the bases. The left-hander then induced what could have been a double-play grounder out of Howard, but Delgado hit Utley squarely in the back, enabling a pair of runs to cross the plate.
"I looked and I thought I had a good lane," Delgado said. "Bases loaded, trying to make a double play, so I'd make that play a hundred times. He kind of slid to the outside of the bag. I tried to secure at least one."
Mets manger Willie Randolph had seen enough of Schoeneweis at that point and went to Jorge Sosa. The right-hander managed to get Pat Burrell to fly out but Werth came up with a big two-out RBI single to make it a 3-2 game.
Philadelphia added two insurance runs to put things away in the eighth off Aaron Heilman. Carlos Ruiz drew a walk to lead off the frame, moved into scoring position on So Taguchi's sacrifice bunt and came around on Rollins's single. After Heilman issued a walk to Victorino, Utley smoked a double over the head of Ryan Church in right to put the Phillies ahead, 5-2.
"It wasn't in typical fashion, we got a break and ran with it," said Rollins of the game-winning rally. "When we play these guys, whoever makes less mistakes wins. It feels good to win but we gotta go out and get the next two."
The Mets jumped on top when Delgado led off the second inning by drilling his first homer of the year over the wall in right-center.
New York added a run in the second. Carlos Beltran drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on Delgado's opposite field single and moved to third on Angel Pagan's infield single before Church chased him home with a ground ball to first.
