American League Game Summary - Detroit at Boston

Final Score: Detroit 7 - Boston 2

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Marcus Thames and Carlos Guillen each homered, and the Tigers finally won their first game of the season, 7-2, over the Boston Red Sox.

Edgar Renteria went 3-for-4 with three RBI and scored twice for Detroit, which lost its first seven contests for its worst start to a season since 2003, the year the team lost its first nine games and finished with an American League record 119 defeats. However, on Wednesday, Jim Leyland's club got plenty of offense and five-plus innings on the mound from starter Jeremy Bonderman.

The bullpen did the rest as the combination of Bobby Seay, Francis Beltran, Denny Bautista and Todd Jones shut out Boston the final four frames.

Brandon Inge had a two-run single for the Tigers in the middle test of the three-game series.

"I think it's just a matter of time with a lot of our hitters," Leyland said. "Certainly, not to say we're out of the woods yet because we finally got a win, but I thought we had a better approach and hopefully this will loosen everybody up a bit more and we'll have that same approach night after night now."

The Tigers were outscored by a 44-15 margin during their seven-game skid, the club's longest since it dropped eight straight contests from September 16-23, 2005. That all came to an end Wednesday.

Bonderman (1-1) was charged with five hits and two runs -- one earned -- with four walks and two strikeouts. He improved to 4-0 with a 3.10 ERA in his last six starts against the Red Sox.

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell left the game with a sprained left thumb. Lowell was hurt when he fell to his knees fielding an Ivan Rodriguez grounder to open the game. X-rays were negative and Lowell is day-to-day.

"It's throbbing a little," Lowell said. "I prefer not to move it because I can't really move it with any force. Actually, in the top of the second, when I got a routine grounder, it hurt me a lot more. They want to see how it reacts tomorrow. I'm hoping for good things."

Jacoby Ellsbury and Julio Lugo each drove in a run for Boston, which has dropped four of its last five games.

Jon Lester (1-2) surrendered five hits and four runs with four walks over 5 1/3 innings and was tagged with the loss.

Down 2-0, the Tigers scored four times in the fourth, helped by one-out walks to Miguel Cabrera and Guillen. Renteria then doubled to the gap in left-center field to tie the score, and Thames followed by pounding a 3-2 pitch over the high wall in left field.

Lugo doubled with one out in the seventh, but was left stranded and Bryan Corey faltered in the eighth on the mound for Boston. Guillen walked and Renteria singled to left to start the inning. Clete Thomas then pinch-hit and put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners before Inge singled both with a hit to center.

Ivan Rodriguez singled to right off Julian Tavarez for his 2,500th career hit, snapping an 0-for-15 slump, and Placido Polanco was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Gary Sheffield grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Guillen took a Javier Lopez pitch over the Green Monster with two outs in the ninth.

Polanco's 187-game errorless streak ended Tuesday and he had another miscue on Wednesday, this one helping Boston to take the lead. Pinch-hitter Sean Casey singled with one out in the second and J.D. Drew walked. The bases were loaded on a Polanco error and Ellsbury walked before Lugo singled to right for the 2-0 margin.
