American League Game Summary - Detroit at Chicago

Final Score: Detroit 5 - Chicago WSox 2

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Magglio Ordonez had a two-run single and Detroit overcame a first-inning injury to starting pitcher Dontrelle Willis to earn a 5-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Willis left the game with a hyperextended right knee after slipping on the mound while delivering a pitch. The combination of Aquilino Lopez, Jason Grilli, Denny Bautista and Todd Jones gave up just four hits and a run over nine innings. Lopez (1-0) threw four innings to get the victory, and Jones struck out two batters in the ninth for his first save of 2008.

Miguel Cabrera and Clete Thomas each had two hits and drove in a run for the Tigers, who have won two of their last three contests after starting the season 0-7.

"I thought the bullpen did very, very well," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It was a tremendous effort from them after Dontrelle got hurt. Ten games doesn't make a baseball season."

Jose Contreras (0-1) was charged with six hits and four runs over 6 2/3 innings for the White Sox, who have lost two in a row after winning five straight.

"Contreras pitched okay, kept the team in the game, but he had a hard time getting any rhythm early," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We really didn't give him any run support."

Carlos Quentin singled in a run and Paul Konerko had the other RBI for Chicago, which was limited to four hits.

White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome was ejected in the fifth inning for protesting a called third strike.

On a rainy, cold night in the opener of the three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field, Willis departed the contest after walking the first two batters then delivering a wild pitch with Thome at the plate.

Willis first slipped down when he threw a pitch to Orlando Cabrera, the second batter of the bottom of the first inning. Lopez then replaced Willis on the mound.

"I just slipped on the mound. I thought I was done for the year. It really hurt," Willis said. "But after the trainer looked at it and we had it x-rayed, they think I'll be okay. I expect to make my next start."

Konerko lofted a sacrifice fly to right and Quentin's RBI single scored Brian Anderson in the second for a 2-0 White Sox lead, but the Tigers rallied to go ahead in the third.

Edgar Renteria doubled to lead off and one out later Brandon Inge singled for a 2-1 margin. Inge stole second and with two down Placido Polanco legged out an infield hit and Carlos Guillen walked to load the bases. Ordonez followed with his base hit to center.

Chicago loaded the bases in the fifth, but Jermaine Dye grounded into a force play to end the threat.

Inge doubled with two outs in the seventh and scored when Thomas hit a double to left off reliever Boone Logan.

Cabrera singled in Guillen in the eighth.
