American League Game Summary - New York at Boston

Final Score: NY Yankees 4 - Boston 1

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Chien-Ming Wang continued his sparkling start to the season, throwing a two-hit complete game, as the New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 4-1, to open a three-game series between the two bitter AL East rivals at Fenway Park.

Jason Giambi, mired in an early-season slump, clubbed the go-ahead homer off Mike Timlin in the seventh inning for the Yankees, who won their second straight.

Wang (3-0) tied a career-best for low-hit complete game, as he also fired a two-hitter in a 6-0 win over Tampa Bay on July 28, 2006. The 28-year-old right-hander could've had a no-hitter going to the ninth had it not been for a J.D. Drew homer which barely escaped over the glove of Bobby Abreu in the fifth inning.

"It's not stress free, but his sinker was outstanding tonight," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He was down in the zone a little bit. He only had one inning in the fifth that he had a little trouble. They got up and hit some fly balls off him and J.D. Drew hit the home run. But he was at the top of his game."

Wang, who also struck out three without a walk, lowered his ERA to 1.23 for the season, and threw just 93 pitches on a typical New England early-spring cold, damp night. It was his fourth career complete game.

"He was electric tonight," Giambi said. "You could tell he was keeping everything down in the zone."

Clay Buchholz surrendered four hits and a run over six innings for Boston, while Timlin (0-1) received the loss in his first game of the season.

The Red Sox have lost five of their last seven games and are struggling with slugger David Ortiz in a slump. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout and is hitless in his last 13 at-bats, and is mired in a 1-for-25 slump since homering in the seventh inning on April 2 at Oakland.

Drew took a 1-0 pitch from Wang to deep right field with one out, and the ball barely got over the glove of Abreu, who failed to leap high enough at the short wall to make the catch. That tied the game.

The Yankees had runners at second and third in the sixth, but couldn't score. Timlin, who had been sidelined with a laceration on his right ring finger, came off the disabled list before the game and gave up the go-ahead homer to the first batter he faced, when Giambi led off the seventh by drilling a 3-2 offering over the wall in center.

Despite the hit, Giambi's average stands at .095 this season.

Jose Molina followed with a double, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alberto Gonzalez and scored when Melky Cabrera lofted a sacrifice fly to right field for a 3-1 margin.

The Yankees had a chance to extend the margin in the eighth, but left the bases loaded when David Aardsma struck out Molina to end the inning. Then in the ninth, Gonzalez doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Cabrera and scored on Abreu's two-out infield hit.

Coco Crisp had Boston's only other hit, a bunt single with two outs in the ninth.

"He was very efficient," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said of Wang. "The game plan is to get it up and stay in the middle of the field and we did at times. We had nothing to show for it."

The Yankees went ahead 1-0 in the fifth. Hideki Matsui and Jorge Posada walked, and one out later, Molina doubled to left-center.
