American League Game Summary - Detroit at Chicago

Final Score: Detroit 0 - Chicago WSox 7

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Gavin Floyd took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, and the Chicago White Sox continued Detroit's early-season misery with a 7-0 blanking of the Tigers in the second of a three-game set.

On a chilly afternoon Floyd (2-0) pushed through early control struggles to dominate the highly touted Tigers lineup, fanning four and walking four in 7 1/3 innings, his longest career start. Orlando Cabrera's solo homer in the third looked to be the only offensive output for the White Sox, until Justin Verlander imploded in Chicago's six-run eighth.

A.J. Pierzynski went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and one scored for the White Sox, who rebounded from consecutive losses to win for the sixth time in eight games.

Verlander (0-2) pitched well into the eighth, where he hit two batters and gave up five of his six runs. Verlander was touched for four hits and walked four in 7 2/3 innings, striking out three for Detroit, which fell to 2-9, the worst record in the majors. The talented Detroit lineup managed only two hits.

Floyd entered the eighth inning having retired 11 straight batters, and ran the string to 12 by striking out Jacque Jones. Edgar Renteria floated a 1-1 pitch into right, though, and the ball fell in for a single to end the 25- year-old right-hander's no-hit bid.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen promptly went to the bullpen after the no- hitter was through, calling on Scott Linebrink, who needed only two pitches to get out of the inning. Ivan Rodriguez grounded back to Linebrink, who threw to second, starting an inning-ending double play.

"Facing a ballclub like the Tigers, throwing the way he did today was outstanding," said Guillen of Floyd's effort. "I think he built confidence ... hopefully that's the beginning of a good career."

Then the White Sox lineup came to life, exploding for six runs in the home half of the inning to blow the game open. The wheels fell off the train for Verlander, who issued a one-out walk to Nick Swisher, beaned Cabrera, and gave up a single to Jim Thome to load the bases with one out. Verlander then plunked Paul Konerko to force in a run.

Jermaine Dye popped up for the second out of the inning, but Pierzynski laced a two-run single to right, ending Verlander's day.

Carlos Quentin greeted Detroit reliever Francis Beltran with an RBI single to left, and Beltran then walked Joe Crede to re-load the bases. Juan Uribe's single to right plated two more runs, before Swisher flied out to finally end the frame.

Bobby Jenks gave up an infield single to Brandon Inge in the ninth, but recovered to retire the next three Tigers to seal the combined two-hitter.

Floyd got into some trouble right out of the gates in the first inurning. He walked Clete Thomas to start the game, and Thomas promptly stole second. Thomas moved up to third on Placido Polanco's line out to right, and then tried to score on Gary Sheffield's grounder, but was thrown out at the plate.

Sheffield then stole second, but Magglio Ordonez flied out to left to end the inning.

Cabrera put the White Sox on top with his home run in the third. With two outs and the bases empty, Cabrera hit a 1-1 pitch out down the line in left, and Chicago took a 1-0 lead.

A leadoff walk in the fourth to Sheffield was Floyd's fourth of the game, but he settled down from there. Ordonez grounded into a double play, and the Tigers went down in order until Renteria's single in the eighth.
