Final Score: Los Angeles 5 - Florida 3
Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Matt Kemp singled home the go-ahead run for his only hit of the day and scored an insurance run on a heads-up baserunning play in the ninth to help the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-3 victory over the Florida Marlins and a sweep of the three-game series at Dolphin Stadium.
Juan Pierre was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in and the Los Angeles bullpen tossed two scoreless innings to help extend the Dodgers' winning streak to six, the longest in the majors.
"I think once he realized what the situation was, his professionalism kicked in, basically," manager Joe Torre said describing Pierre's role with the team. "The only thing hes here for is to win ball games and hes certainly done a hell of a job contributing when hes played."
Joe Beimel (3-0) picked up his second win of the series in relief and Takashi Saito closed the door in the ninth for his fourth save of the season. Hideki Kuroda tossed an effective seven innings for the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Cody Ross belted a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have lost a season-high three straight games.
Burke Badenhop went six innings in the start for Florida, yielding three runs on five hits while issuing two walks and striking out six. He retired the first eight batters of the game, including a stretch where he fanned four Dodgers in a row, but Kevin Gregg (3-2) took the loss by allowing two runs in the ninth.
"Ive got to go out there and throw strikes," Gregg said. "I cant be putting guys on, especially the winning run. Its uncalled for, unnecessary and I blew it."
Gregg walked leadoff man Rafael Furcal to start the ninth and Pierre advanced the runner with a sacrifice. Kemp singled to right, scoring Furcal easily to put the Dodgers back on top 4-3. Kemp then scored the inning's second run on a bizarre play.
After Mark Sweeney walked, Russell Martin hit a comebacker to Gregg, whose throw to second in an attempt to start a double play pulled Robert Andino off the bag. Andino still tried to make the play at first, but overthrew Wes Helms as Kemp raced all the way home to make it 5-3.
Saito retired the side in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the victory with two strikeouts.
Florida struck first with a run in the third, as Matt Treanor led off with a bloop single that left fielder Pierre misjudged to give the Marlins their first baserunner. Hanley Ramirez knocked in Treanor with a two-out opposite- field double.
Badenhop ran into trouble in the top of the fourth, hitting Pierre with a pitch before walking Sweeney. Andre Ethier followed with a two-out line drive single up the middle, scoring Pierre to tie the score. One inning later, Chin- Lung Hu, filling in for Jeff Kent at second, led off with a single and Kuroda sacrificed him to second. After a Furcal walk, Pierre doubled to center field, scoring Hu and Furcal to put the Dodgers on top 3-1.
The Marlins answered right back in the bottom half of the inning with a two- run homer from Ross to tie the game.
Things were quiet from there until the eighth when the Dodgers loaded the bases on three walks, but pinch hitter James Loney grounded out to end the threat.
