Final Score: Philadelphia 0 - Washington 4
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Tim Redding threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, and Lastings Milledge had two doubles and two runs batted in, as Washington blanked Philadelphia, 4-0, in the opener of a three-game series at Nationals Park.
Redding (6-3) scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out a pair for the Nationals, who have won two in a row and shut the Phillies out for the second time this season. Washington also did it on April 2, with Redding as the starter, when he pitched seven one-hit frames.
"He gave us a tremendous effort. He's has been our most consistent pitcher since last year," Nationals manager Manny Acta said of Redding. "He wasn't as sharp early, but he settled down."
The win was also the 3000th for the Washington/Montreal franchise. The Expos notched 2,755, while this was the Nationals' 245th.
Shane Victorino, Chase Utley and Geoff Jenkins all had two hits for Philadelphia, which has only been shut out twice this season, both times at the hands of the Nationals.
Brett Myers (2-5) struggled early, but managed to limit Washington to three runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings of work. The Phillies, though, left nine men on base and went on to lose their third straight.
Washington got an edge in the first. Cristian Guzman singled with one out, and Ryan Zimmerman smoked a double off the warning track in left field to advance both runners into scoring position.
Dmitri Young then sent a fly ball to center that Victorino caught going backward. He made a sharp relay throw to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, whose throw was wide left of the plate, as Guzman crossed safely.
Felipe Lopez led off the home third with a double, and a Guzman single put runners on the corners. Myers then walked Zimmerman to load the bases. After Young struck out, Milledge got a looping hit to drop into right field along the line that Jenkins couldn't reach in time.
It bounced toward foul territory, which allowed both Lopez and Guzman to score, and put the Nationals up 3-0.
Meanwhile, the Phillies had similar chances to put up runs, but didn't get timely hits. They had runners on first and second with one out in both the first and third innings, but didn't advance them further. Additionally, Jenkins was stranded after starting the second and fourth frames with a double.
Washington tacked on another run in the seventh when Young grounded into a double play with Guzman on third.
Redding was followed by Saul Rivera, who got two outs to close the top of the seventh. Luis Ayala and Joel Hanrahan each threw a scoreless inning of relief to finish the game.
