Final Score: Baltimore 1 - NY Yankees 2
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Robinson Cano went 1-for-4, but made his lone hit count, as his single drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to catapult the New York Yankees past the Baltimore Orioles, 2-1.
Hideki Matsui led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, before Alex Rodriguez struck out swinging. Jason Giambi stepped to the plate and was called out when he didn't swing with two strikes but the umpire called him out, saying the ball grazed the bat.
"He said it hit the bottom of the bat, I didn't feel it," Giambi said. "Joe got fired up and I did too. We got a win out of it, that's the most important thing."
Yankees manager Joe Girardi came out to argue the call and received his first ejection of the season.
Girardi's tantrum may have worked in firing his team up, as Bobby Abreu kept the inning alive by earning a free pass. Cano followed with a single to left field, which allowed Matsui to cross home, as Jay Payton's throw was high.
"He was the right guy there and he was one pitch from getting out of it. That's the game," said Orioles manager Dave Trembly.
The win was the 100th victory of Girardi's managerial career.
Shelley Duncan knocked in the other run for the Yankees, who have won two in a row after losing seven of eight. Matsui went 2-for-4 and scored both runs for New York, which won its first series in its last five tries and earned its first walk-off win of the year.
N.Y. starter Ian Kennedy didn't factor in the decision, but was effective and much improved, going six innings and yielding a season-low one run on four hits while fanning four and walking four. Mariano Rivera (1-1) got the win as he threw a perfect ninth inning.
Freddie Bynum went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple for the Orioles, who have dropped three of their last four. Adam Jones was 1-for-3, but scored Baltimore's lone run.
The Orioles struck first in the third inning. Jones clubbed a one-out single to center field, and Bynum followed with an RBI triple to deep left-center. Brian Roberts and Payton both worked walks to load the bases, but Nick Markakis went down swinging for the second out and Aubrey Huff flied out to end the threat.
Matsui led off the fourth with a single, moved to third on Giambi's single and crossed home when Duncan offered a sac fly to left field.
The offenses went dormant for the next few innings, until the bottom of the ninth.
