Final Score: Minnesota 9 - Detroit 4
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Mike Lamb had a triple and home run and a pair of walks, and Kevin Slowey threw six shutout innings, as Minnesota took the opener of a three-game set against Detroit with a 9-4 win.
Lamb also scored every time he reached base, as teammates Carlos Gomez, Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau each collected two hits for the Twins, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Slowey (1-4) earned his first win of the season after giving up just four hits and three walks. Dennys Reyes didn't record an out in letting up three runs, but Jesse Crain, Matt Guerrier and Bobby Korecky combined to limit Detroit to one run in three innings of relief.
"This is a great lineup," Slowey said of the Tigers. "You hear about these guys all the time. It sure helped that we got runs early; that made my job a lot easier. I just tried not to overthrow. I just wanted to make good pitches instead of great pitches when I needed them."
Magglio Ordonez had a pair of hits, while Ivan Rodriguez tripled and had two RBI for the Tigers, who had a three-game win streak stopped.
Armando Galarraga (3-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings. Dontrelle Willis made his first appearance since being activated off the disabled list on Wednesday, and gave up one run in one relief inning.
"He wasn't good tonight," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of Galarraga. "His command wasn't good. He made some bad pitches, and also the lack of control -- he walked five guys -- up here normally, you can't keep churning the lineup over, it's going to haunt you. And the bullpen made some bad pitches, too. That pretty much sums it up."
Consecutive singles from Jason Kubel and Delmon Young kicked off the Twins' rally in the second inning. Lamb followed with a walk to load the bases, and Brendan Harris grounded out to third on a fielder's choice, but plated a run in the process.
Gomez brought Young home with a single to center, but got caught in a rundown on his way to second. Still, Lamb was left on third base and scored later in the inning when Mauer hit a liner off Galarraga's leg, and it caromed to Placido Polanco at second.
Galarraga stayed in the game and struck out Morneau to end the inning, but not before Minnesota had taken the 3-0 lead.
Minnesota added a run each in the fifth and sixth innings, on Michael Cuddyer's RBI single and Lamb's lead-off homer, respectively, for a five-run edge.
In the sixth, home plate umpire Brian Knight called a 3-1 pitch to Tigers third baseman Carlos Guillen a strike -- though replays showed the pitch was in the upper reaches of the strike zone.
Guillen, not pleased with the call, grounded out on the next pitch to end the inning. As the start of the seventh approached, Leyland emerged from the dugout, yelled for some time, and was thrown out by third base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.
But in the bottom of the frame, Detroit mounted a comeback. Pinch-hitter Ryan Raburn led off with a double, and an Edgar Renteria single left runners on the corners with no outs. Rodriguez then battled Reyes for eight pitches, fouling off six of them, before drilling the ninth to right center field. Both runners scored as the ball caromed off the wall, and Rodriguez ended up on third.
Reyes was lifted for Crain, who gave up a double to pinch-hitter Marcus Thames. Rodriguez scored to make it 5-3, but Thames was caught in a rundown between second and third. He ran over and past third base thinking he had been tagged out. In fact, he had not been called out yet, and was easily tagged out in foul territory.
Gary Sheffield then smoked a solo homer to left to get Detroit within one.
But the Twins promptly countered, as Lamb led off the eighth with a triple, ending Willis' day. Lamb then scored when Harris greeted Aquilino Lopez with a single. Lopez got a pair of outs, and was taken out in favor of Bobby Seay. However, Mauer reached on a bunt single, and Morneau cleared the bases with a double that boosted Minnesota's lead to 8-4.
An Alexi Casilla RBI single in the ninth helped seal the game, as Korecky threw a hitless ninth to end it.
