American League Game Summary - Kansas City at Toronto

Final Score: Kansas City 1 - Toronto 3

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Shannon Stewart finished with two hits and knocked in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Kansas City Royals, 3-1, in the third of a four-game series at Rogers Centre.

Alex Rios and Scott Rolen each drove in a run for the Blue Jays, who have won four in a row and six of their last eight.

Dustin McGowan (3-4) earned the win, allowing one run on nine hits over seven innings. The right-hander, who was making his second career start against the Royals, fanned seven without walking a batter. B.J. Ryan pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 11th save of the season.

David DeJesus accounted for the Royals' lone run. Kansas City has dropped seven straight and eight of its last nine.

Gil Meche (3-7) pitched six solid innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out five and walking a pair.

"Location wasn't as good as my previous start," Meche said. "I couldn't quite put them away, that's why I threw so many pitches in six innings. As a starter you want to throw at least six, get a quality start and see what happens."

After the Royals had a threat turned aside in the top of the first, Toronto got on the board in the home half. Stewart led off the frame with an infield single and two outs later came around to score when Rolen laced a 2-1 pitch into the left-center field gap for an RBI double to give the Blue Jays the early advantage.

Kansas City loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth, but managed only one run. DeJesus tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left, but Tony Pena Jr. was thrown out trying to advance to third on a perfect throw by Stewart. Esteban German then struck out to end the inning.

With runners on first and third and nobody out in the home half of the frame, Stewart's run-scoring ground out plated Brad Wilkerson, who led off the inning with a double.

Toronto picked up an insurance run in the seventh. Rod Barajas and Stewart singled with one out, putting runners on first and second. After Aaron Hill bounced into a force out, Rios lined a base hit up the middle to make it a 3-1 game.

There was no further scoring and Ryan was brought on to try and save the win for the Blue Jays in the ninth. The veteran lefty retired the side to end the game.

"When it's 2-1, it doesn't matter, we know we're going to win that game," Toronto first baseman Lyle Overbay said. "That's the confidence we have to have and I think we've changed. Hopefully we can keep it going. Guys are picking guys up and that's the key to winning right now."
