Final Score: Chicago WSox 6 - Cleveland 5
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Carlos Quentin drove in three runs, including two to cap a three-run seventh inning that lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the rubber match of a three-game series at Progressive Field.
Jermaine Dye homered and A.J. Pierzynski knocked in a pair of runs for the White Sox, who have won three of their last four and are 11-3 in their last 14 games.
Jhonny Peralta belted a two-run homer for Cleveland, which lost for the 10th time in its last 12 games. The Indians, coming off an 8-2 win on Tuesday, haven't won consecutive games since a three-game sweep of Oakland from May 13-15.
"It was three hard-fought games," said Indians manager Eric Wedge. "It could have been a situation where we took two out of three. They're [White Sox] playing a little bit tougher than we are right now."
Cleveland had a chance to at least forge a tie in the ninth against Chicago closer Bobby Jenks. Ryan Garko reached on an error by third baseman Joe Crede to start the inning and Grady Sizemore drew a walk. The runners advanced on a bunt by Jamey Carroll, but Jenks got Ben Francisco and Victor Martinez on infield pop ups to end the game and notch his 14th save.
Gavin Floyd (5-3) survived a shaky first inning and worked six frames to earn the win. He was charged with five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.
Jake Westbrook got the start for Cleveland after being activated off the 15- day disabled list prior to the game. He had been sidelined since mid-April with a strained muscle on his left side. The right-hander did not factor in the decision, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
After the Indians grabbed a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, the White Sox answered with three in the top of the seventh to move in front for good.
Crede reached on an error by third baseman Andy Marte to start the inning and Alexei Ramirez singled, chasing Rafael Perez in favor of Rafael Betancourt (1-3). Orlando Cabrera bunted into a force out at third, but Pierzynski doubled home Ramirez and Quentin followed with another double down the left field line to chase home two runners for a 6-5 Chicago lead.
The Indians could not take advantage of a leadoff walk by Sizemore against reliever Octavio Dotel in the bottom of the seventh. After a Carroll bunt advanced Sizemore to second, Dotel fanned Francisco and got Martinez to pop up.
In the eighth against Scott Linebrink, David Dellucci flied to the warning track in right field and Peralta was robbed of a double by a diving Crede at third base before Michael Aubrey dumped a single into right field. Casey Blake then grounded to short to keep Chicago in front.
"We just didn't get the hits when we needed it," Wedge added.
The White Sox went down in order in the first and the Indians scored twice in the bottom of the frame, but could have had more.
Sizemore led off the home first with a bunt single and Carroll followed with a base hit. Francisco then hit a dribbler between home plate and the pitcher's mound and Floyd threw the ball down the right field line for an error to score Sizemore. Martinez singled home Carroll, but Floyd retired the next three batters to keep it a two-run game.
Chicago got one back in the fourth on a two-out homer by Dye, his ninth of the season, then went in front with two runs in the fifth. The Sox loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, then tied the game when Pierzynski grounded out. Quentin followed with a shallow fly ball to right-center field and Ramirez barely beat Francisco's throw home, making a nice slide to get his hand on the plate to avoid the tag by Martinez.
The Indians could not score in the home fifth after a two-out double by Carroll, then regained the lead with three runs in the sixth. Martinez doubled to start the Cleveland rally and scored on another two-bagger by Dellucci. Peralta then belted an 0-2 pitch over the wall in left field for his 11th home run of the season to give the Tribe a 5-3 edge.
