Final Score: Los Angeles 4 - Detroit 5
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Marcus Thames and Brandon Inge belted back- to-back homers in the sixth inning, and the Tigers held off a furious rally in the ninth as Detroit edged the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4, to complete a three- game interleague sweep.
Placido Polanco, Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera added an RBI apiece for the streaking Tigers, who won their sixth straight game.
"We believe in ourselves. People are going to have their doubts or whatever because we got off to a slow start," Thames said. "We've got a good ballclub. Everybody's confident around here. We keep playing hard, good things are going to happen for us."
Nate Robertson (5-6) allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter while fanning three in six shutout innings en route to the win.
Russell Martin blasted a two-run home run for the reeling Dodgers, who have dropped five straight. Jeff Kent chipped in with a pinch-hit RBI single.
Clayton Kershaw, the seventh overall pick in the 2006 MLB draft, was pitching beautifully, allowing just two hits in four shutout inning before being forced from the game after a 47-minute rain delay.
"I was pleased with his four innings. He did extremely well against the tough righthanded line-up," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of his starter. "He had quality stuff and threw all his pitches."
Chan Ho Park (2-2) couldn't match Kershaw and was peppered for five runs on eight hits in just 1 1/3 innings to pick up the loss.
The Tigers broke through with a two-out rally off Park after the delay in the fifth. Brent Clevlen, Edgar Renteria and Polanco rapped consecutive singles to make it a 1-0 game and Guillen followed by slicing an RBI double down the right field line. After Magglio Ordonez worked a walk, Cabrera capped the frame with an RBI infield single.
Detroit kept pulling away in the sixth when Thames and Inge led off by launching consecutive homers off Park.
"You are always going to enjoy that kind of offensive support," Robinson said. "We were both throwing well before the rain, but our guys got it going in the middle innings."
The Dodgers finally got on the scoreboard off Bobby Seay in the ninth. Blake DeWitt greeted the reliever by singling up the middle and Martin followed by blasting a home run over the wall in left. After James Loney slapped another base hit, Tigers manager Jim Leyland pulled the plug on Seay and went to closer Todd Jones.
Jones got into further trouble by giving up another hit to Matt Kemp. The veteran finally recorded an out by getting Andre Ethier to fly out but Kent followed with his RBI single.
Jones then got pinch hitter Delwyn Young to fly out but uncorked a wild pitch, enabling Kemp to score and make it a 5-4 game. With the tying run in scoring position, Jones induced Juan Pierre to pop out to center and secure things.
"We just have to get better at-bats," said Torre. "We sure didn't scare anybody until the ninth today. We finally became more aggressive and were able to string some hits together."
