Final Score: San Diego 0 - NY Yankees 8
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Andy Pettitte was strong through seven innings to lead the Yankees in an 8-0 rout of the San Diego Padres in the first of a three-game interleague set from Yankee Stadium.
Pettitte (7-5) gave up just five hits, tied a season-high with nine strikeouts and passed Ron Guidry for sole possession of fourth place on the Yankees' all- time wins list with 171.
"I'm thankful that I've been able to be here this long," Pettitte said. "I'm grateful to have a great relationship with him; having him here last year and to be down in spring training with him. He's a wonderful man and it's an honor to have as many wins as him."
Jason Giambi totaled three RBI on a pair of home runs, giving him 194 and moving him past Tino Martinez for 14th place on the Yankees' all-time home runs list. Alex Rodriguez also chipped in a solo homer to move ahead of Paul O'Neill for 16th place on New York's all-time homers list with 186. Derek Jeter had a pair of RBI for the Yankees, who have tied a season-high with five straight wins.
Randy Wolf (5-5) tied his shortest outing of the season, going four innings and giving up seven runs -- five earned -- on six hits in the loss.
"Sometimes you get to a point where you're searching to make an adjustment," Wolf said. "I was behind, I threw everything over the plate thigh-high, when you do that you're not going to win."
Chase Headley, San Diego's top prospect who was called up prior to the game, went 2-for-4. No other Padre had more than one hit and none of San Diego's seven hits went for extra bases.
Home runs from Rodriguez and Giambi in the second inning put the Yankees up 2-0.
Each Yankee batted once in the fourth, as the club increased its cushion to 7-0. Hideki Matsui walked to open the home fourth and Giambi deposited Wolf's 2-2 fastball into New York's bullpen beyond the fence in left-center.
Jorge Posada followed with a single, Robinson Cano made it second and third with a double to right and, after Melky Cabrera flied out, Johnny Damon drew a walk to load the bases. Jeter reached on an error that scored Posada.
Bobby Abreu kept the scoring going by grounding into a force, scoring Cano but rendering Jeter out at second. Then with Rodriguez batting, Wolf uncorked a wild pitch that rolled all the way to the backstop, permitting Damon to cross home plate.
New York tacked on another run in the eighth. A Cabrera pop out was sandwiched between singles from Cano and Damon, and Jeter followed with an RBI single to left.
Despite it not being a save situation, Mariano Rivera took the hill for the Yankees in the ninth and got Tony Clark, Headley and Khalil Greene to all go down swinging.
