Final Score: Detroit 7 - San Francisco 2
San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Placido Polanco went 4-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs as the Detroit Tigers pounced on struggling lefty Barry Zito en route to a 7-2 win over the San Francisco Giants in the rubber match of their three-game interleague series.
Carlos Guillen went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in for the Tigers, who have won eight of nine overall. Miguel Cabrera and Magglio Ordonez knocked in a run apiece, while Armando Galarraga (7-2) allowed two unearned runs on seven hits in six innings to pick up the win.
Zito (2-11) lasted just two innings -- his shortest outing of the season -- and allowed five runs on five hits, walking four and fanning two. The former Cy Young Award winner is the first Giants pitcher to drop 11 decisions before the All-Star Break since Livan Hernandez in 2001.
"It feels terrible to let the team down," Zito said. "That's the hard part. These guys bust their butts. There's a difference when it's 5-1 or if you're down by one or two. Momentum plays a big role and I take the blame."
Bengie Molina went 2-for-4 for the Giants, losers in seven of their last nine.
The Tigers got to Zito from the outset, as Polanco singled to right with one out in the first, and after Guillen walked, Ordonez and Cabrera slapped back- to-back RBI singles to center.
Zito continued to struggle in the second, starting the frame with walks to Galarraga and Edgar Renteria. Polanco smashed a double down the line in left to plate Galarraga, and Guillen followed with a double to left of his own, bringing in two more runs and extending the lead to 5-0.
"The home fans are frustrated, and you want to show them something," Zito said. "I had a good bullpen before. It's just taking it out there. The difference is I need to relax more out there."
The Giants threatened in the bottom of the second when Travis Denker doubled to left with one out and Omar Vizquel reached on Cabrera's error. Pinch-hitter Brian Horwitz struck out, but the third strike bounced away from Ivan Rodriguez and allowed Denker to score.
Polanco and Guillen singled off Billy Sadler to start the fourth, but after Ordonez flew out, it looked like Sadler was out of the inning when Cabrera grounded to third to start a surefire double play. But Denker's relay throw from second glanced off John Bowker's glove and Polanco dashed in to score.
Detroit continued to pile on, adding another run in the fifth against Alex Hinshaw. Curtis Granderson doubled with one out, and after Galarraga walked and Renteria flew out, Polanco drilled an RBI single to left.
San Francisco picked up a two-out unearned run in the sixth, as Steve Holm laced a pinch-hit double to right and Emmanuel Burriss followed with a grounder to third. Burriss beat Guillen's throw for a single, but the ball went past Cabrera and Holm crossed the plate.
However, Freddy Dolsi and Zach Miner tossed a scoreless final three innings to thwart a San Francisco comeback.
