Final Score: Cincinnati 6 - NY Yankees 0
Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Edwin Encarnacion's two-run single broke up Dan Giese's shutout bid, and the Cincinnati Reds went on to down the New York Yankees, 6-0, in the second of a three-game set.
A 31-year-old career minor leaguer, Giese made his first major league start, and held the Reds scoreless until a throwing error on his part opened the door for a four-run seventh. Giese (1-2) gave up four hits and three runs -- none earned -- in 6 2/3 innings, fanning five and walking none.
Corey Patterson hit a two-run homer for the Reds, who had dropped five straight before winning the first two of this interleague series. Twenty-two year-old righthander Daryl Thompson made his major league debut for Cincinnati, and tossed five shutout innings for a no-decision, striking out two and walking four.
"When you pitch your game and you know what to do it can go good," said Thompson. "We got big hits today and then we got some more hits and some more runs. You never know what this offense can do. I haven't slept in three days, but I wasn't tired, I was pumped up. After the first two or three pitches I was fine."
Bill Bray (2-0) picked up the win for 1 1/3 shutout innings of relief.
The Yankees, who had won seven straight coming into this series, left 12 runners on base, highlighted by failing to score on a bases-loaded, no-outs situation in the second inning.
Giese retired in 2005 after six years without cracking into the big leagues, and took a job selling cars in California before he caught on with the San Francisco Giants in 2007, where he pitched sparingly as a reliever.
He made three relief appearances for the Yankees this season prior to Saturday, and showed no problems stretching himself into a starter. The "Cinderella story" Giese earned a spot in the rotation thanks to the foot injury that will sideline Chien-Ming Wang until at least September, and he made the most of it, until the seventh inning.
Ken Griffey Jr. singled to center to lead off the seventh, but Giese got Brandon Phillips to ground right back to the mound. Giese turned to try and start a double play, but his throw to second base was wide to the right, and both runners were safe.
"I got a little too excited and sometimes you get overconfident," said Giese. "There is no excuse for that, it was just a bad throw. It would have been nice to get that double play."
Joey Votto grounded out to third, moving the runners up, but then Adam Dunn struck out, and Giese had a chance to see himself out of the threat. Encarnacion singled into left, however, plating both runners for a 2-0 Reds lead.
Giese left to an ovation for his effort, and Jose Veras came on to try to limit the damage. Patterson doubled the Cincy lead, though, with a blast off the facing of the second deck in right, his sixth homer of the season.
Phillips added to the Reds lead with a two-run single to left in the eighth. Phillips was thrown out trying to stretch the base hit into a double, but not before Cincy took a 6-0 edge.
The Yanks got two men on base with one out in the eighth, but Jorge Posada and Robinson Cano both grounded out. Jeremy Affeldt pitched a scoreless ninth for the Reds, working around a two-out single by Derek Jeter to lock down the win.
The Yankees twice squandered chances to jump on top in the second and third innings against the rookie Thompson. Alex Rodriguez doubled, Hideki Matsui reached on an infield single, and Jason Giambi walked to load the bases with no outs in the second. Thompson bore down, though, fanning Posada. Cano then popped out foul, and Thompson came back to strike out Melky Cabrera to end the frame with the game still scoreless.
Johnny Damon walked and Jeter singled to left to put two more runners on base to start the third for the Yankees. Bobby Abreu flied out to left, though, Rodriguez flied out to right, and Matsui lofted a fly to center, as the Bronx Bombers again came up empty.
