Final Score: Arizona 2 - Boston 1
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Dan Haren tossed seven shutout innings and Chris Young went 2-for-3 with an RBI, as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged Boston, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game interleague series.
Haren (8-4) won his second consecutive start after allowing just two hits and a walk, while striking out five. He's unbeaten in his last five outings.
"That might have been as good of stuff as Danny's had all year," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said. "Good breaking ball, good splitter. He threw enough cutters inside to lefties, away from righties. He elevated his fastball about as good as we've seen, and he had to be that good."
Brandon Lyon pitched a perfect ninth inning to nail down his 16th save for Arizona, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
Chris Snyder had the other RBI for the Diamondbacks, who got outfielder Eric Byrnes back from the disabled list. He had been out with a hamstring strain, but returned to go 0-for-5 and left six runners on base.
Arizona's offense struggled for the most part against Josh Beckett (7-5), who threw eight solid innings. Beckett allowed just two runs on five hits and struck out eight, but took the loss, the Red Sox's third out of four games.
J.D. Drew had Boston's only RBI, while Jason Varitek had the club's only extra-base hit, a double.
"Both guys threw the ball real well," Varitek said. "Josh threw the ball as well as he has all year. We probably made a (pitch) selection error on one pitch and it was a double that cost us a run."
Boston had first baseman troubles all of Monday. Prior to the game, Sean Casey dropped his appeal on a three-game suspension, relating to the June 5 scuffle between the Red Sox and Tampa Bay. Casey started serving it immediately, and missed Monday's contest.
Then, before the fifth inning, starter Kevin Youkilis was hit in the right eye by a warmup throw from Mike Lowell. Youkilis left the game to undergo a precautionary CT scan after going 0-for-1, and is day-to-day. That left Brandon Moss to take over first base duties.
After six scoreless innings, Arizona got to Beckett in the seventh. Conor Jackson worked a leadoff walk, and after Chad Tracy struck out, Mark Reynolds singled. Young followed with a double to left that plated Jackson and put both remaining runners in scoring position.
Another run scored on Snyder's groundout to first. Moss, whose first base experience was limited to five minor league games last season, bobbled the ball and ruined a chance to get an out at home. Reynolds scored to make it 2-0, as Moss had no choice but to get the out at first.
"That was pretty much a candy-hop that I got. It couldn't have been an easier ground ball to field," Moss said. "I just took my eyes off of it and saw the runner taking off for home and tried to do too much too soon."
The Red Sox had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom half, but Haren struck out Varitek to end the threat.
Boston, though, did get a run back in the eighth, as Julio Lugo walked with one out, and singles from Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia loaded the bases. Drew then lofted a fly ball to center for the sacrifice, and Lugo came home to make it a 2-1 game. Third baseman Reynolds, though, made a great diving catch on a Manny Ramirez liner for the third out.
Arizona had the bases loaded with one out in the top half of the ninth, but Justin Upton was called out on strikes, and Byrnes whiffed on a high pitch.
Lyon took over in the bottom of the ninth and got three consecutive fly outs, ending the game.
