Final Score: Milwaukee 4 - Atlanta 1
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Ben Sheets was solid on the mound as he threw his third complete game of the year to help Milwaukee open a three-game set against Atlanta with a 4-1 win at Turner Field.
Sheets (9-1) gave up just four hits and one run while striking out seven to win his fifth straight decision. He is now 6-0 in 10 starts on the road this season, and over 12 career starts against Atlanta he is 9-3 with three complete games.
"I got stronger as the game went on," said Sheets. "My location improved and that is tough to do in this league. When pitchers maker their pitches it can be tough on the batter. I'm gonna have my bad days, but today wasn't one of them."
Mike Cameron hit a two-run home run while J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun each had RBI doubles for the Brewers, who have won three straight and seven of eight overall.
Jo-Jo Reyes (3-5) started on the mound but was tagged for four runs on six hits in just 2 1/3 innings of work. Kelly Johnson had a pair of hits and scored a run for the Braves, who have dropped three of their last five.
"He was throwing hard all night," said Johnson about Sheets. "We couldn't get anything going. He started out good and finished good. It was a tough day to facea guy like that."
The Brewers grabbed the lead in the second inning as Corey Hart led off with a single and Cameron followed with a line drive shot over the left field wall.
Milwaukee tacked on two more runs in the third as Rickie Weeks led off with a double, Hardy followed with a double to center and Braun punched a two-bagger to right for a 4-0 advantage.
Atlanta got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Johnson led off with a single and Mark Teixeira got Johnson to third with a single. Brain McCann then hit into a double play that scored Johnson to make it a 4-1 game.
After that, though, Sheets shut down the Atlanta bats as he retired the Braves in order over the next four innings and repeated the feat again in the ninth to finish the game. Overall, he retired the final 16 batters he faced.
