MLB Game Summary - Arizona at Boston

Final Score: Arizona 4 - Boston 5

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Mike Lowell hit a two-run double, and Jason Varitek drove in the go-ahead run in an eighth-inning Boston rally, as the Red Sox stunned Arizona, 5-4, in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set.

Dustin Pedroia finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Boston, which has won two of three. The Red Sox were limited to one run on four hits in Monday's opener, but put together an 11-hit attack to take the win -- just their second in the past five games at Fenway Park.

Justin Masterson gave up four runs on seven hits in a six-inning start, while Chris Smith (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to get the win.

"We're down and if they get more, we're in trouble. (Smith) gives us two solid innings and gives us a chance where, if we get some offense, we actually have a chance to win," Boston manager Terry Francona said.

Boston's Kevin Youkilis, who left Monday's game after getting hit in the face by a warm-up throw from Lowell, played first base in the ninth inning as a defensive replacement.

Arizona starter Doug Davis gave up three runs on seven hits in seven-plus innings, and struck out six. Chad Qualls (1-6) came in to relieve Davis, but was touched for two runs on four hits in two-thirds of the eighth and took the loss, the Diamondbacks' fourth of five.

"He pitched great. It's as good as he's pitched the last couple of times out, if not maybe a little better than that," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said of Davis.

Chad Tracy finished 2-for-3 and drove in all of Arizona's runs, primarily on a three-run homer.

Davis was efficient and effective through seven complete innings, giving up just one run. But he started the eighth by giving up singles to Julio Lugo and Jacoby Ellsbury, and was taken out for Qualls to protect the Diamondbacks' three-run lead.

But Qualls immediately gave up a single to center from Pedroia that brought Lugo around, narrowing Boston's deficit to 4-2. Qualls looked like he might get out of the jam by striking out J.D. Drew and getting Manny Ramirez out on a sharp grounder to third.

However, Lowell slammed a Qualls offering off the Green Monster that caromed past Eric Byrnes back toward the infield. The hit plated Ellsbury and Pedroia to tie the game, while Lowell ended up on third.

In the next at-bat, Varitek completed the comeback by dropping a single in just past the reach of right fielder Jeff Salazar, and Lowell crossed home for a 5-4 Red Sox lead. Qualls was eventually taken out for Tony Pena, who got Arizona out of the inning, but the damage had been done.

"We had a good feeling going into that inning. A couple of guys get on and it unraveled on us a little bit," Melvin said. "We hit some balls earlier, too. We hit a couple of other balls on the screws and just fell a little short."

Jonathan Papelbon gave up a walk to Byrnes in the ninth, but was able to nail down his 22nd save of the season.

Boston got on the scoreboard first, when Pedroia hit a one-out solo homer to left field in the opening frame. Arizona, though, tied the game in the second on Tracy's RBI single to left.

But Tracy's biggest impact came in the third inning. With two outs, Orlando Hudson knocked a base hit to left and Conor Jackson followed with a walk. Tracy slugged the three-run homer to right, giving the Diamondbacks a 4-1 edge.

Davis held the lead until the eighth, as just two Red Sox runners reached base from the third through seventh innings, and neither of them got past first.
