Final Score: St. Louis 8 - Detroit 4
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Brendan Ryan went 3-for-4 with a two-run double and scored, and the St. Louis Cardinals doubled up the Detroit Tigers, 8-4, in a rematch of the 2006 World Series.
Yadier Molina went 3-for-5 and scored twice for the Cardinals, who took the opener of this three-game interleague matchup and have won three of four. Braden Looper (9-5) allowed seven hits and four runs in six-plus innings, striking out three and walking one to get the win.
Gary Sheffield returned from the disabled list and belted a two-run homer for the Tigers, who had won four of five and 12 of 15 entering this series. Kenny Rogers (5-5) gave up nine hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings, fanning two and walking three to take the loss.
The Cards took the 2006 World Series from the Tigers in five games, but Detroit swept St. Louis in interleague play last season, and had won the last six regular season matchups prior to Tuesday.
"It's good to get a win anytime, but it's special to get one here. We always have a tough time winning here. They are a great team," said Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa.
The Cards took control with a three-spot in the sixth inning. Molina laced a leadoff double to left, and moved to third on a Nick Stavinoha groundout. Adam Kennedy singled to right to plate Molina, giving St. Louis a 3-2 edge. Ryan singled to center, then headed to second on the throw to third.
Freddy Dolsi entered the game for the Tigers with runners at second and third and one out, and pinch-hitter Skip Schumaker promptly singled up the middle, plating two runs for a 5-2 Cardinals lead.
St. Louis tacked on three more runs in the seventh, on Stavinoha's RBI single and a two-run double to left by Ryan.
Sheffield, who had been sidelined since May 27 with a strained left oblique, pulled the Tigers to within 8-4 on his fourth homer of the season. Marcus Thames led off the seventh inning with a double to center, and Sheffield followed with a long drive to left to slice the deficit to four.
"I feel great. I think going down there did me a lot of good, gave me the rest that I needed. My shoulder feels great so I'm encouraged by it," said Sheffield.
The Tigers got two runners on with two outs in the ninth against Ryan Franklin, on a one-out walk to Thames and a two-out single by Edgar Renteria. Ivan Rodriguez smashed a hard grounder to the right side, but Kennedy made a nice diving stop to end the game.
The Cardinals jumped on top on a Renteria error in the third, as his misplay of a Barton grounder allowed Stavinoha to score from third with two outs.
Rodriguez tied the game with his third homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center with two outs in the third, and then Miguel Cabrera put the Tigers in front with a solo homer to right with two outs in the fourth.
St. Louis answered with a long ball, however, with Brian Barton going deep to left with two outs and the bases empty in the fifth, his second homer of the season, knotting the game at 2-2.
