Final Score: Baltimore 11 - Chicago Cubs 4
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Aubrey Huff went 4-for-5, knocking in two runs and scoring three as the Orioles trounced the Cubs in the deciding game of their three-game series at Wrigley Field, 11-4.
Jay Payton added two hits and knocked in three more runs as the Orioles posted their second-highest run total this year - Baltimore scored 12 runs in a 12-2 win over the Yankees on May 20. Guillermo Quiroz went 3-for-4, knocking in two runs and scoring one.
"This is definitely one of the most satisfying series we played this year," Huff said. "As far as it being a satisfying win, I think you look at the big picture. We came in here and played very well against a good team."
Radhames Liz (2-0) threw five-plus strong innings, giving up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and four walks. It marked Liz's third consecutive start in which the Orioles posted a victory and the sixth win for Baltimore in its last nine games.
"The reason we won this series was that we have a team that plays good, fundamental baseball," said Orioles manager Dave Trembley. "We have a team that will compete every night, and I guarantee you we'll bring our best game every night. The other team better bring theirs, too."
Jason Marquis (6-4) had his worst outing of the year, throwing only four innings and giving up seven runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
"After the first two innings, I started falling behind hitters and leaving too many pitches out over the middle of the plate," Marquis said. "I put my team in a bad position to win the game."
Eric Patterson knocked in two runs and Daryle Ward went 2-for-2 with an RBI in a losing cause for the Cubs, who have dropped five of nine and had won seven consecutive home series' before dropping two of the three games against the Orioles.
Marquis got into trouble in the third. Quiroz led off the inning with a walk, and after Liz struck out, Brian Roberts hit a liner to center field that turned into a double when nobody covered second base.
Alex Cintron followed with a weak grounder to the pitcher, and after an intentional walk to Nick Markakis, Kevin Millar worked a walk to force in a run and give the Orioles a 1-0 lead.
Huff followed with a two-run double to right, and Payton followed that with a two-run single to left, stretching the Baltimore lead to 5-0.
Markakis drove in two more runs with a two-out double of his own in the fourth, extending the lead to 7-0.
Quiroz added an RBI single in the fifth with two outs to score Huff and make it 8-0.
The Orioles got two of the first three batters on in the sixth against Scott Eyre, who was replaced with Michael Wuertz, who did not fare much better. Baltimore quickly added back-to-back singles to score yet another run.
After Adam Jones added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 10, Quiroz knocked in another run with a bloop single for Baltimore's 11th run, the most the Cubs have given up this season.
Liz started to tire in the sixth as he gave up back-to-back walks to begin the inning. After being lifted for Brian Burres, the Cubs finally started to hit, as pinch-hitter Henry Blanco poked an RBI single to center to score Ronny Cedeno.
After a fielder's choice and a fly out, Ward hit an RBI single to score Jim Edmonds, and Patterson followed with another single that scored Mark DeRosa, cutting the lead to 11-3.
Patterson added the Cubs fourth run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
