MLB Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Florida

Final Score: Tampa Bay 6 - Florida 1

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Matt Garza took a no-hitter into the seventh and finished with a one-hitter for his first career complete game, as the Tampa Bay Rays completed a sweep of the Marlins with a 6-1 victory at Dolphin Stadium.

A day after Garza's alma mater, Fresno State, completed a remarkable run to its first College World Series title, the 24-year-old former Bulldog pitched the best game of his three-year career. Garza (6-4) allowed only one run with a walk and 10 strikeouts to become the second Rays pitcher to throw a one- hitter this year. James Shields did it May 9 against the Angels.

"I made huge strides. Mentally, I think I would have lost after giving up that slider to Hanley (Ramirez)," Garza said. "It was a good pitch, low and outside the zone. He went out there and got it. For those (hits), you just have to tip your cap and say 'good job'."

Garza faced 28 batters, one above the minimum, and has had two of his best starts of the season against the Marlins. In a 4-1 victory over Florida on June 14, Garza went seven innings, giving up only one run on three hits.

Evan Longoria kept up his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a homer, two doubles and two runs scored. Shawn Riggans drove in three runs to give the Rays their seventh win in the last nine games.

"We expect that (offense) out of our club and we just really haven't been clicking as an offense," Longoria said. "I mean the pitching and defense have been keeping us in the games. These last couple of days have just been an offensive explosion for us. We got to try and continue doing that."

Mark Hendrickson (7-6) continued to struggle for the Marlins, dropping his fourth straight decision and failing to record a quality start in his seventh consecutive game. Hendrickson went only 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits with three strikeouts and five walks.

Florida has lost four straight and five of six since taking a series from the Seattle Mariners.

The Rays took a 1-0 lead on a Riggans sacrifice fly in the second with the bases loaded and nobody out. Tampa Bay could not capitalize further as Ben Zobrist and Garza both struck out to end the inning.

Longoria blasted an opposite-field home run to right field -- his third homer in four games -- in the fourth to extend the lead to 2-0.

Tampa threatened later in the fourth after drawing three consecutive two-out walks. Akinori Iwamura followed with an infield single to short to give the Rays a 3-0 cushion.

The offense continued to surge in the fifth, when B.J. Upton drew his second walk of the game and Longoria got his third hit of the game, a one-out ground- rule double to deep center field. After a shallow fly out, Riggans ended Hendrickson's day on a sour note with a double to the left-center field gap to knock in two more runs.

Going into the seventh, Garza had faced the minimum amount of batters since he induced a double play immediately after his only walk of the day in the fourth. He then made his only mistake, leaving his first pitch in the middle of the plate against Hanley Ramirez, who hit his 17th home run of the year.

Zobrist tacked on his second home run in as many days, blasting a shot deep to right field in the eighth off reliever Doug Waechter, accounting for the final margin.
