Final Score: NY Mets 7 - St. Louis 4
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Tony Armas pitched well enough to record a victory in his first start of the season and Ramon Castro drove in three runs, as the New York Mets downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-4, in the second game of a four-game set at Busch Stadium.
Armas (1-0) surrendered four runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk over six innings. The Mets bullpen only gave up one hit without a walk over the final three frames with Billy Wagner notching his 19 save of the season.
Carlos Delgado doubled twice as part of a 3-for-3 night, David Wright also had three hits, scored twice and homered and Endy Chavez ended 2-for-5 for the Mets, who responded from Monday night's blowout loss to the Cardinals.
Todd Wellemeyer (7-3) took the loss for the Cardinals, giving up six runs on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in just five frames. Rick Ankiel hit a two-run home run in the first for St. Louis.
The Mets, trailing 2-0 in the second, got a run back as Ryan Church singled, Delgado doubled and Damion Easley hit a grounder to score Church. St. Louis responded with a run in the home half as Skip Schumaker's double scored Yadier Molina.
New York plated six runs over the next three frames to take control. Delgado and Easley drove back-to-back one-out singles before Castro scored them both with a double. The Mets took the lead for good in the fifth as Chavez singled, Wright doubled and Carlos Beltran hit an RBI groundout. Church's double scored Wright and Castro came through with a big two-out, run-scoring base hit.
Wright's solo shot in the sixth made the score 7-3 and the Cardinals put their last run on the board thanks to Molina's sacrifice fly.
