American League Game Summary - LA Angels of Anaheim at Oakland

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Sean Gallagher was brilliant on the mound in his Oakland debut, as the Athletics toppled the LA Angels of Anaheim, 9-2, in the opener of a three-game series at McAfee Coliseum.

Gallagher (4-4) gave up two runs on just two hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in seven solid innings. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday along with catcher Josh Donaldson, infielder/outfielder Eric Patterson and outfielder Matt Murton in exchange for pitchers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin.

Jack Hannahan was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for Oakland, which has won four its last five. Murton knocked in two runs, while Emil Brown collected three hits and drove in a run. Kurt Suzuki, Jack Cust and Carlos Gonzalez each had two hits.

LA starter Jon Garland (8-6) absorbed the loss after he was roughed up for seven runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings. Justin Speier allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief for the Angels, who have dropped three of their last four contests.

Chone Figgins had an RBI triple for the Halos, who mustered only three hits.

The Athletics opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, as Mark Ellis led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a Daric Barton sacrifice bunt and scored on a RBI single by Hannahan.

Los Angeles pulled ahead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Figgins ripped an RBI triple and later scored on Casey Kotchman's sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.

Oakland erupted for six runs in the bottom half. Cust drew a lead-off walk and back-to-back doubles by Brown and Gonzalez plated two runs. After Ellis laid down a sac bunt, Barton stroked an RBI single back up the middle.

Hannahan then walked and a passed ball put runners on second and third for Donnie Murphy, who was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After Suzuki went down swinging, Murton stroked a two-run single to right. Cust followed with an RBI single to complete the assault.

The A's added two more runs in the fourth on Hannahan's fourth home run of the season -- a two-out smash to right.
