Final Score: Minnesota 3 - Detroit 2
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Glen Perkins kept the Tigers' bats off-balance over 6 2/3 frames, as the Minnesota Twins edged Detroit, 3-2, in the second installment of a four-game set from Comerica Park.
Perkins (6-2) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out a pair in extending his unbeaten streak to eight consecutive starts.
Alexi Casilla went 3-for-5 with a run scored while Nick Punto was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. Delmon Young's sacrifice fly in the seventh turned out to be the deciding run for the Twins, who have won the first two games of the series following a three-game slide.
Tigers starter Armando Galarraga (7-3) surrendered two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five in 5 2/3 frames, taking his first loss since May 23, also to the Twins.
"I thought I pitched a good game," Galarraga said. "I seemed to have runners on base every inning. They are a team of patient hitters and they were able to get my pitch count up, which put me out of my rhythm. You have to give them credit, they are a very tough team."
Carlos Guillen and Placido Polanco had an RBI each, while Matt Joyce and Miguel Cabrera had two hits apiece for Detroit, which had won three straight coming into the series.
The Twins put a run on the board in both the sixth and seventh innings to break a tie game. Jason Kubel worked a walk to open the sixth, moved to third on a double from Brian Buscher and came home on a Punto sacrifice fly.
Casilla led off the seventh with a double to left off Aquilino Lopez. Bobby Seay came on and loaded the bases with consecutive one-out walks, and Young delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1 Twins. Seay got pinch-hitter Brendan Harris to go down swinging to limit the damage.
The Tigers cut the lead to one in the home seventh. Joyce started things with a double to right and Ivan Rodriguez followed with an infield single knocked down by Punto at shortstop. A Curtis Granderson hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one away, and Polanco brought a run home with a sacrifice fly.
Perkins exited in favor of Jesse Crain and Guillen drove a ball to deep straightaway center, but the fleet-of-foot Carlos Gomez tracked it down for the third out.
"It was all Perkins," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We needed that performance. The big thing was we needed Perkins to go deep."
Joe Nathan entered in the ninth to retire the Tigers in order, notching his 26th save of the season.
Detroit struck for the game's first run in the third. Granderson walked to start the frame, moved to second on a Polanco groundout and scored when Guillen laced a single into right field.
Minnesota tied the game at one in the fourth. Buscher singled with two outs and scampered home when Punto singled to right.
