Final Score: Tampa Bay 0 - Cleveland 5
Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Cliff Lee tossed six shutout innings, and Jhonny Peralta doubled, homered and drove in three as Cleveland blanked Tampa Bay, 5-0, in the second of four games with the Rays.
Lee (12-2) gave up five hits and just one walk, while striking out seven for the Indians, who have won two in a row after a 10-game losing streak. Lee's win moved him into a tie with the Angels' Joe Saunders for the American League lead.
Ben Francisco finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI, while Jamey Carroll had two hits and an RBI for Cleveland.
Carlos Pena and Ben Zobrist each had two hits, but Tampa Bay lost its season- high fifth in a row, a streak that comes on the heels of a seven-game win streak.
James Shields (7-6) took the loss after allowing all five runs on 10 hits in six-plus frames. He had won his past three starts, and hadn't lost since a June 10 outing against the Angels -- which is also the last time he gave up five or more runs.
Cleveland took a slight lead in the first, after Francisco hit a two-out single. Peralta then hit a fly ball to deep right field that might have been caught if Jonny Gomes didn't get a bad jump. The ball sailed over Gomes' head and bounced off the wall, and Francisco raced around the bases to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
The tandem extended Cleveland's lead in the third. Francisco came through with another two-out hit, this time a double. Peralta came up, and Shields threw almost the same pitch as the previous at-bat -- a breaking ball low and away to the right-hander.
Peralta didn't miss this time, either, and got just enough bat on the ball to send it over the right field wall and inside the foul pole.
Francisco's RBI double in the fifth, scoring Carroll, gave the Indians a 4-0 lead in support of Lee. The Cleveland starter wasn't perfect -- he gave up a pair of doubles; to Evan Longoria in the second, and to Akinori Iwamura in the fifth. But Lee never got into a serious jam, and kept the Rays off the scoreboard.
Grady Sizemore led off the seventh with a double, and Carroll's single chased him home to complete the scoring.
